The Hawks’ Serious Corruption Investigation team from Bloemfontein and Bethlehem have arrested a 39-year-old traffic officer for corruption on Friday, 20 October.

This comes after the owner of affected trucks reported the alleged incident to the Hawks that there is a traffic officer in Bethlehem who persistently harasses his drivers, demanding money.

According to the Hawks spokesperson Warrant Officer Fikiswa Matoti, the same traffic officer allegedly pulled off the complainant’s truck for inspection and issued the driver with a traffic fine.

He demanded that the driver pays him an amount of R1200 for him not to impound the truck.

During an operation held on 20 October 2023, he was apprehended while in possession of the entrapment money in his vehicle.

The suspect is expected to appear before Bethlehem Magistrates’ Court on 23 October 2023 on charges of corruption.

His arrest has received the attention of the provincial Head of the Directorate For Priority Crime Investigation (Hawks), Major General Mokgadi Bokaba.

The Serious Corruption Investigation team are praised for a job well done and for squeezing the space for corrupt law enforcement officers.
