Acknowledging the gravity of his new role, Mr Motloung expressed his perspective on congratulations upon appointments: “I don’t think it’s appropriate for one to be congratulated upon being appointed in a position because that’s when the real work starts,” he said

Looking ahead, Motloung shared insights into aligning his visions with the enduring vision of the municipality: “My vision is that we’ve got to look at the organisation and strive for organisational excellence.”

Addressing concerns related to the volatile political climate and coalition governments altering municipal visions, he emphasised the adaptability required, saying, “You have an opportunity, in fact annually, to review the IDP…to ensure that it serves the purpose given the changes in demographics.”

Part of Motloung’s immediate concerns includes tackling infrastructure woes, notably improving street lighting to enhance safety. The municipality plans to install overhead lines as a pilot project aimed at deterring criminal activities by making repairs and including technological enhancements like WiFi and surveillance cameras, with an optimistic timeline of implementation within two months.

For the considerable challenges of unfavourable audit opinions from the Auditor General, Mr Motloung detailed the establishment of an Audit Action Plan and emphasised centralizing the supply chain as pivotal methods to ameliorate compliance issues and strengthen internal controls.

On law enforcement, Motloung heralded a rise in Traffic Law Enforcement Officers as a strategy to bolster municipal revenue collection and ensure road safety, outlining this as a defining feature of his tenure.

Concerning environmental matters, particularly pollution in the Vaal River, he acknowledged the municipality’s role in pollution mitigation, discussing ongoing and future projects aimed at minimizing effluent discharge into the river, stemming from a commitment to environmental responsibility.

Lastly, the postponement of a planned Investment Summit, originally devised to bolster local business engagement, was touched upon. The summit aimed to rectify perceived municipal neglect towards local enterprises and was meant to facilitate a collaborative dialogue between the municipality and the private sector. Citing inadequate preparedness as the reason for its deferment, Mr Motloung assured it was a postponement for better planning, emphasising the municipality’s commitment to substantial community and economic development.
