President Cyril Ramaphosa Freedom Day
President Cyril Ramaphosa will lead the national celebrations of Freedom Day at the Union Buildings in Pretoria on Saturday .
Set against the backdrop of the nation’s significant stride into three decades of democracy, this year’s Freedom Day on Saturday is not just any observance. It’s a pivotal point of reflection and celebration, resonating deeply with the essence of South Africa’s journey since the dawn of its democratic era on 27 April 1994.
Under the resonant theme, “30 Years of Democracy, Partnership, and Growth,” the observance carries an extra layer of significance this year, aligning with the 28th anniversary of the South African Constitution, which remains the bedrock of the nation’s supreme law.
An official statement from the Presidency on Wednesday encapsulates the sentiment behind the day: “This commemoration calls on all South Africans to honour our past, celebrate our achievements, and collectively build a future where everyone enjoys equal rights.”
As the country inches closer to the 2024 National and Provincial elections scheduled for May 29, this Freedom Day is an opportune moment for reflection and mobilisation. “Reflecting on the strides made over the past three decades, we honour the sacrifices of those who fought tirelessly for a democratic, equal, and discrimination-free nation. The Freedom Day event will unite all spheres of government and stakeholders and partners from all sectors of society in celebrating our democratic journey,” elaborated the Presidency.
This historic milestone is more than a ceremonial observance. It is envisaged as a confluence point for fostering deeper understanding among South Africans about their rich history and constitutional journey. Moreover, it aims to catalyse dialogue and mobilise efforts across both the public and private sectors to surmount current challenges.
“Minister of Sport, Arts, and Culture Zizi Kodwa, Premier of Gauteng Province Panyaza Lesufi, and Members of the Executive Council, along with mayors and senior government officials, will join President Ramaphosa on this momentous occasion,” confirmed the Presidency.
