During an exclusive interview on The Current Review on Central News, Mxolisi Dukwana, African National Congress (ANC) Free State Chairperson and Premier of the Free State, discussed the party’s 2024 elections manifesto with a keen focus on job creation and the upliftment of the creative sector in the province. The conversation illuminated the ANC’s strategic direction for the upcoming national and provincial elections, particularly in terms of fostering long-term planning and development across several key industries.

Dukwana highlighted various sectors such as agriculture, mining, and particularly the creative industry, as central to the province’s development strategy. He acknowledged past challenges in generating employment and ensuring the survival of crucial industries within the region, admitting, “We’ve been having a problem in terms of long-term planning which allows you as Government whether it be at the local level and the provincial level to be consistent.”

Dukwana laid out a plan to rejuvenate the Free State’s economy. Regarding mining, he underlined the province’s mineral wealth and future mining shafts, promising a revival that could re-establish mining as a backbone of the Free State’s economy. He also touched on the need to address educational output issues to build a skilled workforce capable of driving these industries forward.

A significant portion of the interview concentrated on the creative sector, reflecting the ANC’s renewed commitment to this often-overlooked industry. Dukwana responded to concerns from the creative community about the lack of opportunities within the province, which has led to a brain drain as many talents relocate in search of better prospects. “We’ve demonstrated our passion in that sector,” Dukwana said, acknowledging the creation of a centre in Welkom aimed at dialoguing with creatives about their challenges and aspirations.

Further, he recognised that the Free State Department of Sports, Arts, and Culture had been underfunded and stressed the importance of providing adequate support to nurture the creative industry. He envisions this approach not only to retain talent within the province but also to position the Free State as a vibrant hub for cultural and creative innovation.

On the broader economic front, Dukwana discussed plans for agricultural development, highlighting intentions to transform subsistence farmers into commercial contributors to the province’s food supply. This, he suggested, would also involve supporting young people’s entry into agriculture by improving access to land and resources.

As for accountability and ensuring the fulfilment of these ambitious plans, Dukwana emphasised the need for efficient governance and robust monitoring mechanisms. He firmly stated, “We have been having monitoring committees…we need to strengthen that capacity.”

Meanwhile , the party will be hosting a Provincial Siyanqoba Rally that will be held at Phuthaditjhaba Stadium, Qwa Qwa on the 28th April 2024. The rally will be addressed by President Cyril Ramaphosa.
