The 2024 edition of the ABC Motsepe National Playoffs kicked off with great enthusiasm at the Mxolisi Dicky Jacobs Stadium in Upington on Tuesday. Teams from across the country showcased their prowess, setting the stage for a fiercely contested tournament that will run until June 23, 2024. The two finalists will earn coveted spots in the Motsepe Championship League for the 2024/25 season.
Group B & C Shine with Narrow Victories
Group B and C teams demonstrated their mettle by securing victories with a one-goal margin, leaving their opponents with much to ponder. These early successes have left the tournament wide open, enhancing the excitement and anticipation for the matches to come.

Dramatic Close in Group A
Group A did not disappoint, delivering a thrilling match that concluded in a dramatic draw. The intensity and competitive spirit were evident, promising more edge-of-the-seat moments as the tournament progresses.

Kruger United Triumphs
Kruger United from Mpumalanga started their campaign in spectacular fashion, securing a hard-fought 1-0 victory over the hosts in the first match of the day. The team’s tenacity and strategic gameplay were on full display, setting a high bar for the tournament.

Highbury FC’s Hard-Earned Win
Highbury FC from the Eastern Cape clinched a narrow 1-0 win against Free State’s Mangaung United. The match was a battle of wills, with both teams displaying commendable skill and determination.
Mpheni Defenders’ Heartbreak
The match of the day undoubtedly belonged to Mpheni Defenders from Limpopo and KwaZulu-Natal’s Njampela FC. Mpheni Defenders held a strong 2-0 lead, only to see it slip away in the final moments, resulting in a 2-2 draw. The game was a masterclass in resilience and showcased the unpredictability of football.
Upcoming Fixtures on Day Two
Day Two of the tournament promises more excitement, with three crucial fixtures lined up:
- Highbury FC vs. Thames FC: The first match at 9am will see Highbury FC hosting Thames FC. Both teams will be eager to secure vital points.
- Mpheni Defenders vs. FN Rangers: At 12pm, Mpheni Defenders will look to redeem themselves and bag three points against FN Rangers from the Western Cape.
- Kruger United vs. Dondol Stars: The day will conclude with a thrilling 3pm encounter between Kruger United and Gauteng’s Dondol Stars.
