Central News is looking for a dynamic News Editor to join our editorial leadership team on a fixed-term contract basis.

Job Summary:

We are seeking an experienced News Editor to lead our editorial team in curating high-quality content that resonates with our diverse readership. The ideal candidate will oversee daily news operations, ensure journalistic integrity, and drive digital growth. This role reports directly to the CEO /Editor in Chief.

Contract Terms

  • This is a fixed-term contractual position, not a permanent employment post.
  • The successful candidate will be appointed as a contractor 
  • Payment will be structured as a monthly contract fee, subject to agreed deliverables.
  • No UIF, pension, or standard employment benefits apply.
  • The contract may be renewed by mutual agreement at the end of the term.
  • Compensation is negotiable, based on experience and skills.

Key Responsibilities

•  Manage the editorial workflow, including story assignment, editing, and publication across digital platforms (website, social media, central news weekly/special edition ).

•  Lead a team of reporters and freelancers to produce engaging, fact-checked content on breaking news, features, and investigative pieces.

•  Collaborate with the digital team to optimize content for SEO, audience engagement, and multimedia integration (videos, podcasts, infographics).

•  Uphold ethical standards, ensuring compliance with media laws and best practices in South African journalism.

•  Monitor news trends, competitor content, and audience feedback to refine editorial strategy.

•  Contribute to content planning for special projects, elections coverage, and community outreach initiatives.

•  Mentor junior staff and foster a collaborative, inclusive newsroom culture.

Requirements

•  A journalism/communications degree or equivalent experience.

•  At least 3–5 years newsroom experience (digital or print).

•  Strong editing, writing, and headline skills.

•  Knowledge of South African media law and ethics.

•  Ability to work under pressure and meet deadlines.

•  Leadership qualities with a collaborative approach.

•  Familiarity with digital publishing tools and social media platforms.

•  Proven track record in managing teams and delivering high-impact stories in a deadline-driven environment.

•  Strong knowledge of South African current affairs.

•  Excellent communication skills in English (proficiency in Afrikaans or Sesotho is a plus).

•  Ability to work flexible hours, including evenings and weekends for breaking news.
