Tshwane, South Africa – President Cyril Ramaphosa has underscored the importance of collaboration and mutual understanding between South Africa and Nigeria as pivotal to the progress and prosperity of the African continent.

President Ramaphosa made these comments during a bilateral meeting held in Tshwane with Nigeria’s President Bola Tinubu. The meeting came in the wake of Ramaphosa’s inauguration for his second term on Wednesday.

“Connecting economically with Nigeria is essential for me. Both nations – South Africa and Nigeria – hold significant positions on our continent. When we strategise and cooperate, Africa reaps the benefits,” President Ramaphosa asserted.

Economic Synergy and International Support

Elaborating on the ties between the two countries, Ramaphosa said, “South Africa and Nigeria are key pillars of Africa. Our international support, particularly at forums like the UN and other multilateral institutions, is a testament to our unity. We aim to foster robust economic and trade relations to tackle the shared challenges our nations face.”

The conversation underscored economic collaboration as a cornerstone for mutual growth, with President Ramaphosa highlighting the extensive support from African nations for South Africa’s Government of National Unity.

“The positive reception from the African continent to our Government of National Unity is heartening. This initiative is not only about political stability but also establishing a firm foundation for economic growth and attracting investments,” he added.

Tinubu’s Support and Collaborative Economic Strategies

Expressing his support, President Tinubu, who was in attendance for the inauguration, noted that the dialogue between the two leaders focussed on economic matters.

“I’m here to congratulate my brother on orchestrating an impressive event, particularly the Government of National Unity, which is crucial for political stability. At a time when Africa faces numerous challenges, collaborative economic strategies are imperative to support our vulnerable populations,” President Tinubu remarked.

Path Forward Following Elections

The recent elections on 29 May 2024, which led to a National and Provincial setup without a clear majority, necessitated cooperation among various political formations. Ramaphosa’s second term comes amidst these collaboration efforts to guide the nation forward.
