Transnet, South Africa’s state-owned company in the logistics sector, has officially announced the appointment of Lekau ‘Solly’ Letsoalo as the new Group Chief Operating Officer (GCOO), effective from next month.

A Reputable Return

Letsoalo, a seasoned professional with an impressive career portfolio, is no stranger to Transnet. His prior tenure as the Chief Operating Officer of Transnet Port Terminals (TPT) saw him achieve notable milestones, making his return a significant and strategic move for the organisation.

Transnet Group Chief Executive Michelle Phillips expressed her enthusiasm, stating, “It is great to welcome Letsoalo back to Transnet and to be able to draw on his global knowledge of the logistics industry at such an important time in our organisation’s history.”

Extensive Industry Expertise

With over 14 years in the private sector, Letsoalo brings a wealth of experience from his roles as Managing Director at Aveng Manufacturing and, more recently, as the Chief Executive Officer of Cargo Carriers. His comprehensive understanding of logistics and operations positions him well to spearhead Transnet’s objectives.

Proven Track Record

Transnet’s statement highlights Letsoalo’s previous accomplishments within the organisation. During his time at TPT, Letsoalo was instrumental in several key projects:

  • Expansion of the Pier 2 Container Terminal
  • Construction of the Pier 1 Terminal
  • Building of the Ngqura Container Terminal
  • Modernisation of the Cape Town Container Terminal

These achievements not only demonstrate his robust managerial skills but also his ability to execute large-scale infrastructure projects successfully.

International Acumen

Letsoalo’s international exposure further enriches his profile, with learning experiences spanning several countries including the USA, UK, Belgium, Germany, Thailand, Hong Kong, and Japan. This global perspective is anticipated to bring innovative and diverse approaches to Transnet’s operations and strategies.

“His global exposure, including learning experiences in the USA, UK, Belgium, Germany, Thailand, Hong Kong, and Japan, have further enriched his leadership capabilities,” Transnet noted
