The Independent Electoral Commission of South Africa (IEC) has confirmed an attempted unauthorised entry at its Gauteng provincial warehouse. The incident occurred on Tuesday night when unknown individuals tried to infiltrate the secured facility.

The IEC takes extensive measures to ensure the safety and proximity of electoral supplies. This entails expanding the footprint of storage sites ahead of each election cycle, making sure that the materials are stored as close as possible to their points of use.

Post-2024 Elections Rollback

Following the conclusion of the 2024 National and Provincial Elections, the commission undertook a rollback of materials for storage and safekeeping at a centralised facility. During this process, materials from a local storage site in Johannesburg’s inner city were being transported back to the provincial warehouse.

However, during this transit, a group of individuals interfered with the handling of the materials and subsequently followed the truck to the warehouse. Upon arrival, the group made an attempt to forcefully gain unauthorised entry into the warehouse.

Swift Police Response

In an official statement, the IEC reassured the public: “The commission can confirm that nothing was taken from the warehouse.” The quick and effective response from the South African Police Service ensured the safety of IEC staff and the integrity of the stored materials.

Ongoing Investigation

A case has been registered with the South African Police Services, who are now investigating the incident. The IEC expressed its gratitude to the police for their prompt action, which was instrumental in averting a potential crisis.

Commitment to Electoral Integrity

This incident underscores the importance of stringent security measures in maintaining the integrity of South Africa’s electoral process. The IEC remains steadfast in its commitment to safeguarding democracy, ensuring that every election runs smoothly and securely.
