Ramaphosa Assures Welkom Residents of Government Action

President Cyril Ramaphosa recently led a District Development Model (DDM) Presidential Imbizo at the Kopano Indoor Sports Centre in Thabong, Welkom, in the Matjhabeng Local Municipality.

The purpose of the Imbizo was to provide residents with an opportunity to voice their challenges and for the government to address and resolve these issues. This visit was a follow-up to the initial Imbizo held in Mangaung in April last year.

During the Imbizo, community members raised a variety of challenges, namely sewerage and water issues, the need for housing, and concerns about crime and police visibility. President Ramaphosa assured residents that the government is actively working to address these issues and emphasized that there are ongoing efforts to correct past and present wrongs.

The President, along with various Cabinet Ministers, addressed each of the challenges raised by the community members. Human Settlements Minister Mmamoloko Kubayi assured residents that the department is in the process of building thousands of houses to address the housing needs of the community.

Water and Sanitation Minister Senzo Mchunu acknowledged the water and sanitation challenges in the area and provided an update on the progress made in resolving these issues. He explained that a water board, Vaal Central, has been appointed to fix dysfunctional waste water treatment plants, pump stations, and collapsed sewer lines. He also detailed the allocation of funds for the refurbishment of water supply lines.

Minister of Police Bheki Cele addressed concerns about crime and police visibility in the area, noting that the South African National Defence Force has been deployed to address illegal mining challenges. He also emphasized the government’s commitment to providing resources and support to the Community Policing Forums (CPFs) to enhance police visibility and improve safety in the community.

President Ramaphosa’s first Imbizo in the Free State, held in the Mangaung Metropolitan Municipality in April last year, also addressed pressing matters related to water, sanitation, and road infrastructure. The Ministers present at the Imbizo committed to dealing with these challenges and ensuring improvements in service delivery.

The District Development Model (DDM) Izimbizo, which have taken place throughout the country, serve as an interactive platform for communities to engage directly with the President, Ministers, and local leadership. The DDM aims to enhance integrated and sustainable service delivery through intergovernmental planning, budgeting, and implementation, ultimately creating inclusive economic opportunities for locals.

The DDM, introduced and adopted by Cabinet in 2019, seeks to improve cooperative governance and enhance service delivery in line with the National Development Plan. President Ramaphosa emphasized the government’s commitment to addressing the challenges faced by residents and reaffirmed the ongoing efforts to ensure that all levels of government are working together to resolve these issues.
