Three Arrested in Connection with Hijacking of Courier Truck

Three male suspects have been arrested in connection with the hijacking of a courier truck on the N6 highway in the Eastern Cape. The truck, transporting clothing worth approximately R500,000 from East London to Queenstown, was intercepted by armed men wearing reflector jackets on June 6, 2025. The suspects forced the driver to divert to Mpongo Park, where they offloaded the cargo into three vehicles before fleeing the scene. This incident underscores the persistent threat of highway crime in the region and the determined response from law enforcement.

Incident Details

The hijacking took place on Friday, June 6, 2025, at approximately 10:20 AM on the N6 highway. According to the police report, three suspects—aged 25, 32, and 42—wearing reflector jackets signaled the courier truck to stop. When the driver initially refused, two of the suspects brandished firearms, compelling the vehicle to pull over. The assailants then entered the truck, taking control and directing the driver, along with two colleagues, to Mpongo Park.
Upon reaching Mpongo Park, the victims observed three getaway vehicles: a brown Toyota Corolla, a white Toyota seven-seater, and a red Honda seven-seater. The suspects swiftly transferred the cargo—consisting of clothing—into these vehicles and fled the scene, leaving the driver and colleagues behind.

Police Operation

A case was promptly opened at Macleantown SAPS and handed over to the East London Organised Crime Unit for investigation. Following extensive intelligence gathering, a coordinated multi-unit operation was launched on June 12, 2025, involving both the Organised Crime and Flying Squad units.
The operation bore fruit across three locations in Mdantsane:

  • NU10, Mdantsane: Police recovered the brown Toyota Corolla along with a portion of the stolen goods.
  • NU8, Mdantsane: Additional stolen items were seized at a second residence, though the suspect was not present at the time.
  • NU12, Mdantsane: A suspect was arrested at a third residence, where further stolen goods and a gold Honda vehicle were recovered.
The recovered items included multiple brands of new sneakers (“tekkies”), ladies’ handbags, clothing, and two of the vehicles used in the crime.
    Arrests and Charges
The three suspects now face serious charges, including truck hijacking, armed robbery, and kidnapping. They are scheduled to appear before the East London Magistrate’s Court in due course, as the investigation continues to unfold.
Captain Hazel Mqala, police spokesperson in the Office of the Provincial Commissioner Eastern Cape, stated: “The suspects face charges of truck hijacking, armed robbery, and kidnapping. They will appear before the East London Magistrate’s Court in due course. The investigation remains ongoing.” Authorities have indicated that additional arrests may follow as they pursue further leads.
