Pitso Mosimane
By Sello Masilo
Cairo, Egypt — South African football stalwart Pitso Mosimane has reportedly said that he would only consider a return to Egyptian giants Al Ahly if the club’s leadership acknowledges the fundamental reality that “football has three things: Win, Draw and Lose”. He insisted he is not prepared to coach a club that believes it will always emerge victorious without failure.
⸻
Mosimane’s Remark Reflects His Respect for Football’s Realities
The veteran coach, who led Al Ahly to multiple trophies between 2020 and 2022—including two CAF Champions League titles, CAF Super Cups, an Egyptian Premier League crown, and two bronze medals at the FIFA Club World Cup—was reportedly approached by the club following the dismissal of José Riveiro .
However, Mosimane made it clear that his return hinges on a profound shift in mindset: a readiness to accept that losing and drawing are as much a part of the game as winning. He said he is “not ready to coach a club that thinks plays alone. That they will always win.”

Club Denies Talks; Board Likely to Stick with Egyptian Coach
Despite the speculation, Al Ahly quickly denied any negotiations with Mosimane regarding the coaching role . Further, respected sports journalist Amr Fahmy expressed strong reservations about a reunion, explaining that Al Ahly’s board would be unlikely to rehire a coach they themselves let go—admitting past decisions can be politically difficult .
Fahmy suggested that the club is more inclined to appoint a local Egyptian coach until the CAF Champions League group stages. Only if performance falters might they re-evaluate their stance .
⸻
Mosimane’s Egyptian Legacy Remains Strong
• Between 2020 and 2022, Mosimane secured key continental and domestic honours for Al Ahly, including CAF Champions League successes and the Egyptian Premier League title .
• Despite stepping down in June 2022 citing heavy workloads, his influence on the club’s success remains clear .
His stance on returning only if the club embraces realism speaks to both his integrity and his unwavering commitment to football’s true nature.
⸻
What a Potential Mosimane Return Would Mean
1. Trophy Potential – With a proven record in CAF competitions, Mosimane remains one of Africa’s most successful coaches.
2. Cultural Fit – He understands the inner workings of Al Ahly, its players, and the pressures of Egyptian football .
3. Mindset Shift Required – His position signals a desire for a more transparent and resilient football culture—one that embraces loss as much as win.
Yet, the political dynamics at Al Ahly mean his return may remain a low-probability scenario in the short term .
⸻
Bringing It Home: A Coach with Principles
Pitso Mosimane has consistently shown he values projects built on realism and accountability, not entitlement. While rumours of his return to Al Ahly surface amid coaching instability, the prospects hinge not just on his willingness, but whether the club’s leadership is ready to acknowledge that winning isn’t guaranteed. Until then, Mosimane remains anchored in principle—and football’s undeniable truths.
