Deputy President Paul Mashatile
The presidency confirms that Deputy President Paul Mashatile will deliver a keynote address at the 48th anniversary of the Youth Day Commemoration on Sunday, 16 June 2024. The event will take place at the Old Peter Mokaba Stadium in Polokwane, Limpopo Province, under the theme: “Actively embracing the socio-economic gains of our democracy”.
In an official statement, the presidency highlighted the significance of National Youth Day, an annual event that honours the sacrifices made by South Africa’s youth in the struggle for democracy. This day is particularly remembered for the Soweto Uprising of 16 June 1976. The event, immortalised in our history, underscores the bravery of young people and the enduring importance of youth development in post-apartheid South Africa.
Celebrating 30 Years of Freedom
This year’s commemoration holds additional significance as the nation celebrates 30 Years of Freedom alongside the successful conclusion of national and provincial elections. According to the presidency, “Deputy President Mashatile will highlight progress made in improving the lives of young people and also reflect on the remaining challenges which require immediate attention.”
Government’s Commitment to Youth Development
The government, in collaboration with various stakeholders, continues to champion initiatives aimed at enhancing the physical and mental health of young people. Efforts include tackling substance abuse, crime, and gender-based violence while promoting academic excellence and economic participation. Strengthening solidarity and social cohesion among the youth remains a top priority.
Engaging Activities and Opportunities
The Youth Day commemoration will feature an expo showcasing opportunities related to skills training, learnerships, bursaries, careers, and entrepreneurship. The day’s activities will kick off with a marathon in the morning, gathering young people, sports personalities, and government representatives. This will be followed by a cultural programme that includes a music concert, cultural dances, and poetry performances.

Deputy President Mashatile will not be alone. He will be accompanied by a high-profile delegation including:
