The ANC Renewal Project Has Never Been an ANC Project, But the DA Project
Opinion Piece by Rev. Mo’hau Khumalo – The so-called ANC Renewal Project has been packaged as a noble idea to cleanse the movement of corruption, factionalism, and rot. But the bitter truth — which few in the ANC dare to utter aloud — is that this project has never been an ANC project at all. It has always been, and continues to be, a Democratic Alliance (DA) project, executed with precision by Cyril Ramaphosa, who serves as the political hand behind the trigger.
Every comrade who has been “renewed,” sacrificed, and betrayed under Ramaphosa’s leadership did not fall because of ANC processes, but because they were targeted and investigated under the DA’s script of delegitimizing black leadership. From Jacob Zuma to Ace Magashule, from DD Mabuza to Nosiviwe Mapisa-Nqakula, from Bongani Bongo to Tony Yengeni, Carl Niehaus, Pule Mabe, and others — the fingerprints of DA-inspired lawfare and character assassination are evident. Ramaphosa has used the DA’s accusations, dossiers, and campaigns as a handgun to eliminate his internal rivals, parading their political demise as a moral triumph.
Let us be clear: Ramaphosa is not renewing the ANC. He is systematically dismantling it, turning it into a neutered liberal tool of colonial appeasement. The “renewal project” is nothing more than a betrayal project — a systematic removal of anyone who embodies the spirit of radical African transformation, and a reshaping of the ANC into a shadow of the DA’s neoliberal dream.
And make no mistake, the hit list is far from complete. The next line of betrayal is already clear: Paul Mashatile, Panyaza Lesufi, Lebogang Maile, Nomvula Mokonyane, Supra Mahumapelo, Dakota Legoete, Mzwandile Masina and others — all marked, whether guilty of anything or not. Their crime is simply that they do not belong to Ramaphosa’s neoliberal pack. They are obstacles to his mission of handing the ANC, and with it South Africa, over to colonial interests in the form of the DA and its Western sponsors.
Even those who today enjoy the proximity privileges of Ramaphosa’s smile — the likes of Fikile Mbalula and Gwede Mantashe — should not be fooled. History teaches us that Ramaphosa’s smile is a mask, not a shield. They, too, will be betrayed when the time comes.
This project has never been about morality or renewal. It has always been about neutralizing liberation voices, killing off radical African thought, and ensuring the ANC is domesticated into the colonial project of the DA. Renewal has become the poisoned chalice — dressed in the language of reform but executed in the spirit of betrayal.
As we celebrate Heritage Day, we must pause and reflect: our black revolution is in crisis and under sustained attack. The project of liberation, dignity, and African self-determination is being dismantled from within. Even those who today believe they can defend it must watch the clock closely — for the time of betrayal is ticking, and reality will unfold in the near future.
South Africans must open their eyes: the ANC Renewal Project is not an ANC-led crusade of self-correction. It is the DA’s long-term vision being carried out from within, weaponizing Ramaphosa against his own comrades.
In the end, the tragedy is not only the destruction of individuals. It is the destruction of the ANC itself — a liberation movement reduced to an instrument of white monopoly capital, colonial appeasement, and neoliberal betrayal.
The Renewal Project is nothing but the DA Project. And Ramaphosa is its most loyal executioner.
