Man Arrested for Illicit Diamond Dealing in Bloemfontein Mall

Man Arrested

A 39-year-old man was arrested on Saturday, 27 January 2024, in Bloemfontein for being in possession of uncut diamonds without a license. The arrest came as a part of the Public Order Police Unit Bloemfontein’s Operation Shanela, aimed at curtailing crime in the area.

The apprehension occurred at a busy shopping mall situated on Heatherdale Road in the Heidedal suburb after proactive intervention by local law enforcement. The Bloemfontein authorities acted swiftly on insider intelligence supplied by the dutiful manager of a local store specializing in the trading and pawn of various goods.

Police spokesperson Lt Col Thabo Covane outlined the circumstances leading up to the arrest. The officers, already engaged in Operation Shanela’s activities, descended upon the shopping venue to investigate the suspicious transaction. It was here that they encountered the suspect in the act of unlawfully attempting to sell five stones which he purported to be diamonds.

Upon inspection, it was determined that of the stones presented by the male suspect, three were genuine diamonds, while two others were identified as counterfeits. The rapid response by the policing unit resulted in the immediate detention of the individual, who was unable to produce any documentation or license to engage in the trade of such precious commodities.

“A case of Possession of Illicit Diamonds has been opened at the Heidedal Police Station,” Lt Col Covane stated. The suspect, whose name has not yet been released to the public, is currently being held and is slated to make an imminent court appearance at the Bloemfontein Magistrate Court.
