Northern Cape – The South African Police Service (SAPS) in the Northern Cape successfully conducted a week-long “Operation Shanela,” resulting in the arrest of 242 perpetrators across the province.
Multi-Disciplinary Police Action Yields Impressive Results
“Multi-disciplinary teams arrested 130 suspects for crimes such as dealing in drugs, illegal dealing in liquor, robbery, attempted murder, assault with intent to do grievous bodily harm (GBH), and burglary,” stated Police Spokesperson Colonel Cherelle Ehlers. Additionally, 112 individuals wanted for serious offenses including business robbery, murder, rape, and assault GBH were successfully apprehended by detective teams.
Strategic Measures and Highlights of the Operation
The operation included a variety of tactical measures designed to maximise its reach and effectiveness. Key actions included:
- Search and Seizure Operations: Premises were meticulously searched, and numerous stop-and-search actions and high-visibility patrols were conducted.
- Compliance Inspections: Establishments were scrutinised to ensure adherence to legal standards, leading to the closure of five (5) unlicensed liquor outlets and the confiscation of considerable quantities of alcohol.
- Roadblocks and Vehicle Checkpoints: A total of 5,679 individuals and 2,764 vehicles were stopped and searched.
- Rural Crime Intervention: Teams visited farms in rural territories to combat stock theft, further bolstered by targeted awareness campaigns in the Frances Baard and Pixley Ka Seme districts.
Community Engagement and Youth Outreach
In alignment with Youth Month, SAPS conducted extensive awareness campaigns and community engagements in collaboration with various stakeholders. These initiatives focused on critical issues such as human trafficking, bullying, sexual offences, substance abuse, teenage pregnancy, and school discipline. These educational visits extended to numerous schools and communities across all districts.
Colonel Ehlers remarked, “In support of Youth Month, awareness campaigns, community engagements, and school visits were conducted in conjunction with relevant external stakeholders in all districts where several schools and communities were visited. Priority issues such as the prevention of human trafficking, bullying, sexual offences, substance abuse, teenage pregnancy, and school discipline were addressed.”
Continuing The Crackdown
“Operation Shanela will continue with disruptive actions during the next week to ensure that priority crimes are addressed in hotspot areas,” Ehlers concluded
