Union Buildings
Tshwane, SA – The City of Tshwane has issued an advisory to residents and motorists about the substantial street closures around the Union Buildings, Sunnyside, and Hatfield due to the upcoming Presidential Inauguration on Wednesday, 19 June 2024. The closures will be strictly enforced from 03:00 on Wednesday until 06:00 on Thursday, 20 June 2024.
President Cyril Ramaphosa, who was re-elected as head of state by the National Assembly in their first sitting for the seventh administration last Friday, will be officially inaugurated. Ramaphosa and Economic Freedom Fighters’ Julius Malema were both nominated for the presidential position.
Tshwane Metro Police released a statement outlining the event: “The Presidential Inauguration is expected to be attended by the president-elect of the Republic of South Africa, foreign heads of state, invited guests, and members of the public. The heads of state and other dignitaries and the delegates are expected to arrive at different points of entry.”
Roads Affected
Motorists are advised to plan accordingly, as the following roads will be closed:
- Gordon Road and Stanza Bopape Street
- Jan Shoba and Stanza Bopape Streets
- Grosvenor and Stanza Bopape Streets
- Hilda and Stanza Bopape Streets
- Festival and Stanza Bopape Streets
- Athlone and Stanza Bopape Streets
- Hill and Stanza Bopape Streets
- Orient and Stanza Bopape Streets
- Balmoral Avenue and Stanza Bopape Street
- Lisdogan Avenue and Stanza Bopape Street
- Farenden and Stanza Bopape Streets
- East Avenue and Stanza Bopape Street
- Beckett and Stanza Bopape Streets
- Pine and Stanza Bopape Streets
- Blackwood and Stanza Bopape Streets
- Johan and Stanza Bopape Streets

Trial Runs for Street Closures
A trial run for the street closures will occur on 16 and 17 June 2024, commencing at 02:00 until completion. The Tshwane Metro Police Department, in collaboration with other law enforcement agencies, will supervise to ensure smooth operations.
Alternative Routes
Motorists are advised to use the following alternative routes:
- Pretorius Street
- Park Street
- Du Toit Street
- Greef Street
Accredited Parking and Shuttle Services
Rietondale Park will be available for invited guests with appropriate accreditation. Shuttle services will run from 03:00 until 06:30.
Additionally, Tshwane Showgrounds (also known as Tshwabac), located at 205 Soutter Street, Pretoria West, will accommodate public parking with bus services to the Union Buildings. Note, private vehicle access to the Union Buildings and surrounding areas will be restricted, except for residents with permits.
Permit Collection for Residents
Residents residing around the affected areas (Union Buildings and Rietondale) must collect permits from Pieter Delport Centre, located at 770 Government Avenue, Eastcliff, Pretoria. Proof of residence is required at collection.
As the city prepares to host an event of national significance, all residents and motorists are urged to exercise patience and comply with the guidelines provided to ensure the occasion proceeds smoothly.
