Nedbank Cup Final
By Sello Masilo
The 2025 Nedbank Cup final between Kaizer Chiefs and Orlando Pirates has officially sold out, as confirmed by the Premier Soccer League (PSL). Scheduled for Saturday, 10 May 2025, at 15:30, the match will take place at Durban’s Moses Mabhida Stadium, which boasts a capacity of 56,000 seats.
Unprecedented Demand Leads to Ticketing Challenges
Tickets for the final went on sale on Monday, 5 May 2025, through Open Tickets and affiliated outlets, including Shoprite and Checkers. However, the overwhelming demand caused significant technical issues. Open Tickets’ system experienced multiple crashes, leaving many fans frustrated after successful payments without receiving ticket confirmations. In response, Open Tickets issued a statement acknowledging the disruptions and assured customers that they are addressing the issues, including reissuing tickets or providing refunds where necessary .
PSL’s Measures to Ensure Fair Ticket Distribution
To combat ticket hoarding and black-market reselling, the PSL enforced a strict limit of four tickets per customer. This measure aimed to ensure fair access for genuine fans. Despite these efforts, the rapid sell-out has led to concerns about potential overcrowding and safety on match day. Fans have expressed their frustrations on social media, with some suggesting that the stadium’s capacity may be insufficient for such a high-profile match .
A Historic Rivalry Renewed
This final marks the first Nedbank Cup final between Kaizer Chiefs and Orlando Pirates since 2006. The Buccaneers, having recently defeated Amakhosi 2-1 at FNB Stadium, are aiming to secure their second consecutive Nedbank Cup title. Meanwhile, Kaizer Chiefs are eager to end their trophy drought and claim their first major silverware in over a decade.
Match Day Broadcast and Safety Advisory
For fans unable to secure tickets, the match will be broadcast live on SABC 1 and SuperSport channels. The PSL has urged ticket holders to arrive early to avoid congestion and ensure a smooth entry into the stadium. Authorities have also emphasized the importance of adhering to safety protocols to prevent any incidents during the event.
