Erasmus Opts for Consistency: Etzebeth and Willemse Return as Springboks Eye Rugby Championship Glory Against Argentina

Springbok head coach Rassie Erasmus has kept faith in his winning squad, making just two tweaks to the starting lineup that crushed the All Blacks 43-10 in Wellington two weeks ago. The changes see the return of veteran lock Eben Etzebeth and versatile back Damian Willemse for the crucial Rugby Championship clash against Argentina in Durban on Saturday, 27 September 2025. This victory would seal the title for South Africa, who sit second on the log with 10 points, tied with New Zealand but ahead on points difference. Argentina, on 9 points, still have a shot at the crown if they pull off an upset at Hollywoodbets Kings Park.

The announcement underscores Erasmus’ strategy of building momentum through stability, especially after a record-breaking win over the Kiwis. With the Rugby World Cup on the horizon, this match is a key test for the Boks’ depth and resilience. As South Africa celebrates Heritage Day, the team’s blend of experience and youth reflects the nation’s diverse spirit, uniting fans in anticipation of another thrilling encounter.

Minimal Changes Highlight Squad Depth

Erasmus has made only two personnel switches to the starting XV. Eben Etzebeth, the most-capped Springbok with 136 Tests, slots back in at lock, replacing the injured Lood de Jager. At fullback, Damian Willemse takes over from Aphelele Fassi, who is also sidelined with injury. This shift allows Damian de Allende to return at inside centre, partnering Canan Moodie in a dynamic midfield.

Captain Siya Kolisi will lead the side in his 97th Test, anchoring a forward pack that includes Pieter-Steph du Toit and Franco Mostert. The backline features Handre Pollard at flyhalf, with Cheslin Kolbe and Kurt-Lee Arendse on the wings.

On the bench, Erasmus sticks with a 5-3 split, but introduces three changes: Boan Venter at prop, allowing Jan-Hendrik Wessels to cover hooker, and Morne van den Berg replacing the niggled Grant Williams at scrumhalf. “We were very pleased with the way the team rose to the challenge against the All Blacks, and looking at the Pumas team and their strengths, we believe this would be the best team for this specific match,” Erasmus explained.

The full Springbok team is: Damian Willemse; Cheslin Kolbe, Canan Moodie, Damian de Allende, Kurt-Lee Arendse; Handre Pollard, Jaden Hendrikse; Jasper Wiese, Pieter-Steph du Toit, Siya Kolisi (capt); Eben Etzebeth, Franco Mostert; Frans Malherbe, Bongi Mbonambi, Ox Nche. Replacements: Jan-Hendrik Wessels, Gerhard Steenekamp, Boan Venter, Elrigh Louw, Kwagga Smith; Morne van den Berg, Manie Libbok, Lukhanyo Am.

Rugby Championship Standings: Title on the Line

The Boks head into the final round with everything to play for. Currently second with 10 points from four games, they trail leaders Australia (11 points) but have a superior points difference. New Zealand also sit on 10, while Argentina have 9. A bonus-point win could secure the trophy for South Africa, depending on other results.

Argentina, under coach Felipe Contepomi, have impressed with wins over New Zealand and Australia this season, plus a victory against the British & Irish Lions earlier. Erasmus warned: “This is a vital match for both us and the Pumas… they pose threats all around.”

The Pumas’ lineup features stars like Pablo Matera and Julian Montoya, promising a bruising battle.

Etzebeth and Willemse: Boost from Returning Stars

Etzebeth’s return adds steel to the second row. The 33-year-old, set for his 137th cap, brings leadership and lineout prowess, crucial against Argentina’s strong pack. “The make-up of this team not only allows us consistency in selection, but we’ll also have the vast experience of Eben and Damian de Allende,” said Erasmus.

Willemse, shifting to fullback, offers versatility and flair. His inclusion allows de Allende’s return, strengthening the midfield. Both players are “excited to get back on the field,” per Erasmus.
Injuries to de Jager (shoulder) and Fassi forced the changes, but the squad’s depth shines through.
