Premier Mxolisi Dukwana appoints MaQueen Letsoha-Mathae as Acting Premier of Free State

Free State Premier Maqueen Letsoha-Mathae

**BLOEMFONTEIN – ** The Democratic Alliance (DA) Free State leader, Dr Roy Jankielsohn, publicly voiced his reservations regarding Maqueen Letsoha-Mathae’s appointment as the new Premier of the Free State on June 14, 2024. Letsoha-Mathae, previously the MEC for Community Safety, Roads, and Transport, has faced criticism for her tenure, particularly concerning her alleged inability to effectively deliver services and maintain the province’s infrastructure.

DA’s Concerns About Letsoha-Mathae’s Capabilities

Dr Jankielsohn expressed that Letsoha-Mathae’s past performance in her role as MEC did not “inspire confidence”. He added, “She was unable to deliver services and roads to put the lives of people at risk.” Despite these concerns, the DA extended congratulations to Letsoha-Mathae and the newly sworn-in office bearers in the Free State Legislature.

However, Jankielsohn remained sceptical about the impact of her leadership within the African National Congress (ANC). “We are aware that changing a face in the ANC will not change the party,” he stated.

Maqueen Letsoha-Mathae’s Election as Premier

Letsoha-Mathae was elected during the first sitting of the 7th Provincial Legislature, held at the 4th Raadsaal in Bloemfontein. The nomination came from the outgoing Premier, Mxolisi Dukwana, who is also the ANC Free State provincial chairperson, and it was seconded by ANC deputy chairperson Toto Makume.

In response to Letsoha-Mathae’s election, the ANC issued a statement affirming their support for her leadership. The ANC expressed confidence in her ability to bring about “visible change to the Free State” and underscored the party’s commitment to improving living conditions for the province’s residents.

The DA’s Commitment to the Free State

Dr Jankielsohn highlighted the DA’s ongoing dedication to address the province’s challenges. He mentioned that the majority of the population remains in poverty, with 62% living under such conditions. The DA, which saw significant growth in the recent provincial elections, is focused on upholding the rule of law, protecting democracy, and standing as a formidable opposition within the province.

“The DA will continue to champion policies that promote economic growth, social equality, and the well-being of all residents in the Free State,” said Jankielsohn. He reiterated that the DA representatives, including himself and others like David Janse van Vuuren, Jafta Mokoena, and David McKay, are committed to ensuring the people’s voices are heard and their issues are addressed.

ANC’s Stance and Letsoha-Mathae’s Vision

In their statement, the ANC portrayed Letsoha-Mathae as a leader dedicated to women’s empowerment and praised her longstanding commitment to the movement. The ANC Women’s League also lauded her election, citing it as a testament to the party’s efforts towards gender equality and women’s liberation.

Letsoha-Mathae, in her inaugural speech, vowed to tackle corruption head-on and establish systems to protect state funds. “The issue of corruption will be prioritised. That has been the enemy of progress in the Free State. We are here to serve the people,” she asserted.
