Free State Premier Letsoha Mathae
By Thabo Mosia
The African National Congress (ANC) and its Women’s League (ANCWL) in the Free State are celebrating the election of MaQueen Letsoha-Mathae as the new Premier of the province. This achievement is not just a win for the ANC but also a resounding victory for women’s empowerment in South Africa.
ANC’s Statement on the Appointment
The ANC in the Free State released an official statement expressing their confidence in Letsoha-Mathae’s leadership.
“The ANC in the Free State is of the firm view that in Comrade Letsoha-Mathae, the province has a Premier whose dedication and commitment will undoubtedly bring visible change to the Free State,” the statement read.
The ANC’s statement highlighted the recent general elections, stating that despite significant challenges and opposition, the people of the province reaffirmed their faith in the ANC.
“This, we managed to achieve, despite a relentless onslaught from our detractors. Despite these challenges, the ANC rose to the occasion and emerged victorious. We accept this mandate with grace and humility, and we have faith in Comrade Letsoha-Mathae to steer our ship to great heights.”
The ANC emphasized that Letsoha-Mathae’s appointment aligns with their long-standing view that liberation is incomplete without the emancipation of women. They lauded her proven leadership, as demonstrated through her role as the Treasurer-General of the ANCWL.
ANCWL’s Celebration of Women’s Empowerment
The African National Congress Women’s League (ANCWL) in the Free State echoed similar sentiments. Theodorah Mosala, ANCWL Free State Provincial Secretary, expressed profound congratulations to the Premier-elect.
“The ANCWL Free State wishes to extend its warmest congratulations to the Premier Elect, Comrade MaQueen Letsoha-Mathae,” said Mosala. “The ANC continues to show its unwavering dedication to gender equality and women’s empowerment.”
She further stressed that Letsoha-Mathae’s election is a testament to the ANC’s commitment to including women in leadership and decision-making positions. Mosala cited the resolutions of the ANC’s 55th National Congress, which emphasized that organizational renewal is impossible without the active participation of women.
A Promising Future with Letsoha-Mathae
Newly-elected Premier MaQueen Letsoha-Mathae has vowed to hit the ground running. She declared her commitment to making the Free State a beacon of hope and focused on tackling corruption head-on.
“The issue of corruption will be prioritised. That has been the enemy of progress in the Free State. We are here to serve the people,” said Letsoha-Mathae.
Her election marks her as the fifth female Premier in the Free State since the dawn of democracy, reflecting progress in gender equity. Letsoha-Mathae’s leadership caps a concerted effort by the ANC and ANCWL to advance women in political and societal roles.
Thanking the Outgoing Premier
Both the ANC and ANCWL took the opportunity to thank the outgoing Premier, Mxolisi Dukwana, for his service. They acknowledged his leadership during challenging times and his commitment to the development of women’s interests.
“Premier Mxolisi Dukwana served our movement with the highest integrity, and we hold him in high regard,” the ANCWL stated.
New Leadership in the Legislature
In addition to Letsoha-Mathae’s election, the Free State Legislature saw Zanele Sifuba re-elected as Speaker and Julia Maboya sworn in as Deputy Speaker. Their appointments further reinforce the commitment to inclusive and robust governance.
