The City of Tshwane has announced a review of 68 Memorandums of Understanding (MoUs), including its arrangement with lobby group AfriForum. This MoU, initially signed to facilitate services like grass cutting, waste management, and security, has sparked debate over its alignment with equitable service delivery principles. While some parties, like the Economic Freedom Fighters (EFF), argue that the MoU should be canceled due to concerns over AfriForum’s potential influence, the Democratic Alliance (DA) has expressed support for a review rather than an outright termination. Mayor Dr. Nasiphi Moya explained that this review aims to ensure transparency, fairness, and alignment with the city’s commitment to accessible and reliable public services for all residents.
AfriForum has responded by reaffirming its commitment to community support, including maintaining public spaces and improving safety, with CEO Kallie Kriel noting that their involvement remains unpaid and community-driven. This partnership emerged as a response to service delivery challenges, especially amid financial pressures and a recent municipal workers’ strike that left parts of the city in need of additional maintenance.
