27,000 Tickets Sold for Kaizer Chiefs vs Mamelodi Sundowns Clash, Capacity Decision Pending

27,000 tickets sold for Kaizer Chiefs vs Mamelodi Sundowns clash, with capacity decision pending on whether to cap at 45,000 or expand to 60,000, as the highly anticipated Betway Premiership match at FNB Stadium on Wednesday will also be broadcast live on SABC 3.

In a boost for one of South African football’s biggest rivalries, Stadium Management South Africa chief executive officer Bertie Grobbelaar has revealed that 27,000 tickets have already been snapped up for the upcoming Betway Premiership encounter between Kaizer Chiefs and Mamelodi Sundowns. The match, scheduled for Wednesday, 27 August 2025, at FNB Stadium in Johannesburg, has generated significant excitement among fans. A final call on the stadium’s capacity—whether to limit it to 45,000 or increase it to 60,000—will be made by midday on Tuesday, 26 August 2025. Adding to the accessibility, the game will be televised live on SABC 3, allowing supporters across the country to tune in.

This early ticket surge reflects the enduring appeal of the fixture, often dubbed the “El Kasico” of South African football. Last season’s corresponding match at the same venue drew a total of just 23,000 spectators, making the current sales figure a notable improvement and a sign of renewed interest in the league. Grobbelaar shared the update during an interview, emphasising the factors being considered for the capacity decision, including safety protocols, crowd management, and demand projections. “As things stand, there’s 27k tickets sold, but we can still go up to 45k or 60k in terms of allocation. But that’ll be determined tomorrow by 12pm. Some factors to be considered there,” Grobbelaar stated.

Strong Demand Signals Revival in Fan Engagement

The rapid ticket sales come amid a positive start to the 2025/26 Betway Premiership season for both teams. Kaizer Chiefs, under coach Nasreddine Nabi, remain unbeaten after three matches, sitting joint-top of the table with nine points alongside Polokwane City. Their recent 2-1 victory over AmaZulu showcased the form of players like Mduduzi Shabalala and Ashley du Preez, building optimism among the Amakhosi faithful. Mamelodi Sundowns, the defending champions aiming for an unprecedented eighth consecutive title, have also collected seven points from their opening fixtures, with stars like Lucas Ribeiro Costa and Teboho Mokoena leading the charge.

Football analysts attribute the ticket rush to several factors, including the return of fans to stadiums post-Covid restrictions and the league’s efforts to enhance matchday experiences. FNB Stadium, with its full capacity of over 94,000, has hosted memorable clashes between these giants, but recent games have seen reduced attendances due to various reasons, including economic pressures on supporters. The decision on capping sales will likely hinge on security assessments and logistical readiness, as larger crowds require additional measures to ensure a safe environment.

Comparisons to previous high-profile matches underscore the potential for a bumper crowd. For instance, the Carling Black Label Knockout quarter-final between Chiefs and Sundowns in October 2024 saw over 54,000 tickets sold, including hospitality packages. Earlier in September 2024, a league encounter at FNB drew 44,000 fans, doubling the attendance from the prior season’s fixture. If the cap is lifted to 60,000, it could mark one of the largest turnouts for a regular league game in recent years, signalling a revival in domestic football’s popularity.

Broadcast on SABC 3 Widens Reach

The announcement that the match will be live on SABC 3 is a win for accessibility, especially for fans unable to attend in person. The public broadcaster has ramped up its coverage of the Betway Premiership this season, aiming to bring top-tier action to households nationwide. Kick-off is set for 19:30, with pre-match build-up expected to feature analysis from experts like former players and coaches.
This move aligns with efforts by the Premier Soccer League and broadcasters to grow the sport’s audience. SABC’s involvement has been crucial in past seasons, often drawing millions of viewers for big games. For those attending, tickets are available through Computicket, with prices starting from R40 for general admission, rising to R100 for premium sections. Hospitality packages, if available, could push costs higher, but they offer enhanced experiences like VIP seating and catering.

Team News and Match Preview

Both sides enter the game with minor injury concerns but strong squads. For Chiefs, midfielder Yusuf Maart returns from suspension, bolstering the engine room alongside Sphephelo Sithole. Striker Ranga Chivaviro, who scored against AmaZulu, will lead the line, supported by creative forces like Gaston Sirino. Sundowns, managed by Manqoba Mngqithi, welcome back defender Mosa Lebusa, but will miss injured winger Abubeker Nasir. Their attack, featuring Ribeiro Costa and Peter Shalulile, remains potent.
Historically, Sundowns have dominated recent meetings, winning the last five league encounters, including a 5-1 thrashing in April 2025. Chiefs’ last victory over their rivals came in September 2021, a 2-0 win at Loftus Versfeld. With both teams in form, the match promises goals and drama, potentially influencing the early title race.
