On May 12, 2025, U.S. President Donald Trump announced plans to sign an executive order aimed at significantly reducing prescription drug prices in the United States. The proposed policy, known as the “Most Favored Nation” (MFN) approach, seeks to align U.S. drug prices with those of countries that pay the lowest prices globally, potentially lowering costs by 30% to 80% .

President Trump emphasized the disparity in drug pricing, stating that Americans have been paying substantially more for the same medications compared to other nations. He criticized pharmaceutical companies for attributing high prices to research and development costs, arguing that such justifications have unfairly burdened American consumers.

The MFN policy would primarily impact drugs covered under Medicare Part B, which includes medications administered in doctors’ offices, such as cancer treatments. By tying U.S. payments to the lowest prices paid by other countries, the administration aims to reduce overall healthcare spending and alleviate financial pressure on Medicare beneficiaries .

This initiative revives a similar effort from President Trump’s first term, which was blocked by a federal court due to procedural issues. The previous attempt projected savings of over $85 billion over seven years . The current proposal is expected to face opposition from the pharmaceutical industry, which argues that such pricing strategies could hinder innovation and limit access to new treatments .

The executive order is set to be signed at 9:00 A.M. Eastern Time, marking a significant step in the administration’s efforts to reform drug pricing and make healthcare more affordable for Americans.
