After more than seven years, Zambian President Hakainde Hichilema has lifted a travel ban on Julius Malema, the leader of South Africa’s Economic Freedom Fighters (EFF). The ban, initially imposed by former Zambian President Edgar Lungu in 2017, prohibited Malema from entering Zambia due to his outspoken support for Hichilema when he was in opposition. This diplomatic gesture comes as Hichilema, now in power, seeks to strengthen unity across African nations by embracing progressive leadership ideals.

The decision to end the restriction aligns with similar actions in Botswana, where Malema was previously barred from entering. Just a day before the inauguration of newly elected Botswana President Duma Boko, the Botswana government announced the lifting of its long-standing travel restriction on Malema. The Botswana ban, originally enforced in 2011, stemmed from Malema’s criticism of then-President Ian Khama, whom he accused of leading a “puppet regime.” In a statement issued Thursday, Botswana formally declared the ban nullified, paving the way for Malema to enter the country for Boko’s swearing-in ceremony.

Malema’s attendance at President Boko’s inauguration marked his first visit to Botswana in over a decade. At the time of his initial ban in Botswana, Malema served as the leader of the ANC Youth League and was known for his strong political stances, often critical of African governments he perceived as failing to promote sovereignty and democracy. His criticisms of Botswana’s leadership led to his immediate blacklisting from the country.

The lifting of the bans in both Zambia and Botswana signals a significant shift in regional political dynamics, with African leaders increasingly emphasizing the need for unity and progressive change. Following his visit to Botswana, Malema confirmed the lifting of Zambia’s ban, underscoring the symbolic importance of these developments. His renewed access to Zambia not only reflects the changing political climate under Hichilema’s administration but also reaffirms Zambia’s commitment to democratic values and freedom of expression.

EFF’s Statement on the Ban Lift

In response to the news, the EFF issued a statement expressing appreciation for Hichilema’s decision. The party described the move as a “profound gesture that highlights the spirit of unity and progressivism that is increasingly taking root across Africa.” The EFF’s statement further noted that Hichilema’s action symbolizes a break from the repressive tactics of the past, marking a new era for Zambia’s diplomatic relations and regional stance on political freedoms.

The EFF recalled that in 2017, then-President Lungu banned Malema after he publicly supported Hichilema, who was arrested at the time for allegedly obstructing Lungu’s motorcade. Malema’s support was viewed as a challenge to Lungu’s authority, leading to his designation as persona non grata. The EFF, however, emphasized that the recent change demonstrates Hichilema’s dedication to democratic ideals, showcasing his intent to build a “united and progressive Africa.”

Background of the Zambian Ban

The ban on Malema followed a tense period in Zambian politics. In April 2017, Hichilema, then the leader of the opposition, was arrested on charges of failing to give way to Lungu’s motorcade. His arrest was widely condemned by human rights groups and international observers, who saw it as a politically motivated attempt to silence opposition voices. At the time, Malema was outspoken in his support of Hichilema, accusing Lungu’s administration of authoritarian practices that disregarded Zambia’s democratic foundations. Malema’s condemnation of Lungu’s government and his solidarity with Hichilema ultimately led to his ban from Zambia.

The recent decision by President Hichilema to revoke the ban is seen as a key step in reversing Zambia’s previous repressive measures. It also signals his commitment to enhancing democratic freedoms, moving away from practices that once stifled political dissent. Hichilema, who campaigned on promises to strengthen democracy and uphold human rights, appears to be aligning his leadership with these values.
