Trump Arranges Potential Peace Summit Between Zelensky and Putin After White House Talks
US President Donald Trump said Monday he had started arranging a peace summit between Ukraine’s Volodymyr Zelensky and Russia’s Vladimir Putin, after intensive talks with Zelensky and European leaders at the White House. Trump said he had spoken by phone with Putin – whom he met in Alaska last week – following a “very good” meeting with the Europeans and the Ukrainian president in the White House. “At the conclusion of the meetings, I called President Putin, and began the arrangements for a meeting, at a location to be determined, between President Putin and President Zelensky,” Trump said on his Truth Social platform.
Breakthrough Discussions Aim to End Ukraine-Russia Conflict
In a significant diplomatic push, President Donald Trump announced on his Truth Social platform on Monday, August 18, 2025, that he is orchestrating a potential peace summit between Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky and Russian President Vladimir Putin. This follows a high-stakes White House meeting with Zelensky and leaders from Britain, France, Germany, Italy, Finland, the European Commission, and NATO. Trump described the discussions as “very good,” focusing on security guarantees for Ukraine led by Europe in coordination with the US.
The announcement came after Trump spoke by phone with Putin, building on their recent summit in Alaska. Trump expressed optimism, stating a bilateral meeting between Putin and Zelensky could occur within “a week or two weeks,” followed by a trilateral summit including himself. “Everyone is very happy about the possibility of PEACE for Russia/Ukraine,” Trump wrote, emphasising guarantees that exclude Ukraine’s NATO aspirations but ensure its security.
A source familiar with the talks confirmed to AFP that Putin expressed readiness to meet Zelensky, marking a potential thaw in relations amid the ongoing war. This aligns with Trump’s campaign pledge to end the conflict swiftly, positioning the US as a mediator while leveraging European support.
Zelensky Hails ‘Best’ Meeting Yet with Trump
Zelensky, meeting Trump one-on-one in the Oval Office for the first time since a tense February encounter, described the talks as their “best” yet. The atmosphere was notably calmer, with Trump complimenting Zelensky’s attire—a stark contrast to previous criticisms. Zelensky reiterated Ukraine’s stance: no territorial concessions and firm security guarantees.
The multi-leader summit underscored unified Western support, though European allies expressed caution over Trump’s push for quick concessions. Leaders like those from Germany and France advocated for a coordinated approach, rejecting any deal that weakens Ukraine’s sovereignty. Trump highlighted discussions on guarantees, stating Putin agreed to Western-backed measures despite ruling out NATO membership for Kyiv.
