Beverage giant Coca-Cola has agreed to use real cane sugar in its US production, President Donald Trump announced Wednesday on social media, sparking debates on health, economy, and consumer preferences amid ongoing criticism of high-fructose corn syrup.

Trump’s Social Media Revelation and Coca-Cola’s Response

US President Donald Trump took to his Truth Social platform on Wednesday to share what he described as a major win for American consumers. In his post, Trump claimed he had personally influenced the beverage company to make a significant change to its flagship product.
“I have been speaking to Coca-Cola about using REAL Cane Sugar in Coke in the United States, and they have agreed to do so,” Trump wrote. [0] He added, “I’d like to thank all of those in authority at Coca-Cola. This will be a very good move by them – You’ll see. It’s just better!” [29]
The announcement comes at a time when health concerns over processed foods are high on the agenda, particularly with Health Secretary Robert F. Kennedy Jr. leading the Make America Healthy Again (MAHA) movement. [30] Kennedy has been vocal about the dangers of ingredients like high-fructose corn syrup (HFCS), seed oils, and artificial dyes, linking them to various health issues such as obesity, diabetes, and inflammation. [31] The MAHA initiative pushes for food companies to reformulate products, and this potential shift aligns with calls for reduced sugar intake and updated dietary guidelines expected this summer. [31]
Coca-Cola, however, has not fully confirmed the switch. In a brief statement, the company said, “We appreciate President Trump’s enthusiasm for our iconic Coca-Cola brand. More details on new innovative offerings within our Coca-Cola product range will be shared soon.” [29] This response leaves room for interpretation, suggesting possible new products rather than a complete overhaul of the existing formula. [35] Coca-Cola has been exploring sugar reduction strategies, as CEO James Quincey mentioned in April, including recipe changes and promoting low-sugar options. [30]
The discussions between Trump and Coca-Cola reportedly stem from a January meeting where Quincey presented the president with a commemorative inauguration-themed Diet Coke bottle. [33] While the exact motivation for Trump’s push remains unclear, it does not affect his personal favourite, Diet Coke, which he famously summons via a special button in the Oval Office. [35] Diet Coke is sweetened with aspartame, recently classified as a “possible carcinogen” by the International Agency for Research on Cancer (IARC). [30]

The History and Controversy of HFCS in Coca-Cola

Coca-Cola has used HFCS as its primary sweetener in US products since the 1980s, a shift driven by economic factors. [29] In 1984, the company announced it would increase HFCS usage due to government subsidies for corn growers and high import tariffs on cane sugar, making corn-based sweeteners cheaper. [37] This change allowed for cost savings but drew criticism over time for contributing to America’s health crisis.
HFCS and sucrose (cane sugar) are both made up of fructose and glucose, but their structures differ. HFCS has free fructose and glucose in a 55/45 ratio for soft drinks, while sucrose bonds the two sugars together. Despite these differences, scientific reviews, including a 2022 study, show no major health distinctions between the two when consumed in equal amounts. Both can lead to weight gain, heart disease, and type 2 diabetes if overconsumed, with dietitians recommending no more than 50 grams of added sugars daily for adults—one can of Coke contains about 39 grams.
However, some studies note a slight increase in inflammation markers with HFCS. Consumer perception often favours cane sugar as more “natural,” leading to premium pricing for imports like Mexican Coke, which uses cane sugar and is bottled in glass for a nostalgic appeal. Taste tests describe Mexican Coke as having a “more complex flavour with spicy and herbal notes,” sometimes hinting at root beer. In 2013, Mexican bottlers switched some products to glucose-fructose syrup, but exports to the US as “Coca-Cola Nostalgia” retained cane sugar.
Pepsi has offered a “real sugar” variant for years, showing it’s possible to provide alternatives without fully replacing HFCS. Petitions and social media campaigns, like those on Reddit, have long called for Coca-Cola to reinstate cane sugar in US products, citing better taste and health concerns.

Economic Implications and Backlash from the Corn Industry

A full switch to cane sugar could have ripple effects on the US economy. The Corn Refiners Association has strongly opposed the idea, with President and CEO John Bode stating, “Replacing high fructose corn syrup with cane sugar would cost thousands of American food manufacturing jobs, depress farm income, and boost imports of foreign sugar, all with no nutritional benefit.” The Corn Belt in the Midwest, a key Trump support base, relies heavily on these subsidies, and any shift might lead to higher costs for Coca-Cola, potentially passed on to consumers.
Cane sugar also has a shorter shelf life, which could increase manufacturing expenses. Trump’s home state of Florida, the top US sugarcane producer, might benefit, but overall, the move could favour imports from countries like Mexico or Brazil. The Trump administration has already pressured soda companies by allowing some states to exclude sugary drinks from SNAP benefits.
