Sekhukhune Vala Umgodi Task Team Arrests Six in Illegal Mining Crackdown

Sekhukhune Vala Umgodi Task Team

The Sekhukhune District Vala Umgodi Task Team has arrested six suspects in an intelligence-driven operation targeting illegal mining and related offences in the Sekhukhune area of Limpopo on Friday, 08 August 2025, as part of ongoing high-visibility patrols and stop-and-search activities at identified hotspots to deter environmental crimes and protect natural resources.
This multifaceted raid underscores the relentless efforts of the multi-agency Vala Umgodi initiative, which combines forces from the South African Police Service (SAPS), the Department of Mineral Resources and Energy, and other stakeholders to combat illicit extraction that causes widespread ecological damage and economic losses. In Sekhukhune, a mineral-rich district known for chrome and platinum deposits, such operations have become crucial amid rising illegal activities fuelled by high unemployment and syndicates exploiting rural vulnerabilities.

Early Morning Interception in Tweefontein

The operation kicked off at about 02:20 in the Tweefontein mining area, adjacent to the Red Chrome mining site near Klarnet mine. Officers intercepted a green side-tip truck with brown trailers loaded with minerals presumed to be chrome ore. The 57-year-old driver could not produce a valid permit authorising the loading and transportation of the material, leading to his immediate arrest for illegal transportation of chrome. This charge falls under the Mineral and Petroleum Resources Development Act, which requires strict licensing to prevent unregulated mining that depletes resources and evades taxes.
Chrome, a key export for South Africa used in stainless steel production, has seen a surge in illegal trade, with syndicates smuggling it across borders to Mozambique and beyond. In Limpopo alone, such activities cost the economy millions annually in lost revenue, while causing soil erosion and water contamination that affects local farming communities. The truck and its load were impounded as evidence, with forensic tests planned to confirm the mineral type and trace its origin.

Arrests at Mabowe Park for Active Illegal Mining

Later, at about 08:40, the team moved to Mabowe Park in Ga-Mathabatha, where three adult males aged 36, 39, and 46 were spotted engaging in illegal mining activities. The suspects were cornered and arrested on the spot, with mining equipment including shovels, picks, and possibly generators confiscated. These tools are typical in small-scale illicit operations that dig shallow pits or process ore on-site, often without safety measures, leading to collapses and fatalities.
Illegal mining in Ga-Mathabatha has been a persistent issue, with previous raids in July 2025 yielding similar arrests for chrome extraction in nearby areas like Spitskop. Communities here suffer from dust pollution affecting respiratory health and degraded land that hampers agriculture, a lifeline for many rural families. The arrested men face charges under the National Environmental Management Act for acts detrimentally affecting the environment, as well as mining without permission.

Immigration Violations Uncovered in Tukakgomo

The day’s activities concluded at about 15:30 in Tukakgomo village, where two adult males were arrested for contravening the Immigration Act. One was found with a passport indicating an overstayed visa, while the other had no documentation at all. These arrests highlight the cross-border element often seen in illegal mining, where undocumented foreign nationals are recruited as cheap labour by syndicates, exposing them to exploitation and hazardous conditions.
In Limpopo’s Sekhukhune district, immigration breaches are common in mining hotspots, with operations like Vala Umgodi frequently netting suspects from neighbouring countries. This not only strains local resources but also fuels tensions in communities grappling with high unemployment rates exceeding 40% in some areas.

Broader Impact of Vala Umgodi and Ongoing Commitments

Operation Vala Umgodi, meaning “close the hole” in isiZulu, was launched nationally in 2022 to address the scourge of illegal mining, which costs South Africa an estimated R100 billion yearly in lost revenue and environmental cleanup. In Limpopo, the task team has ramped up patrols, leading to hundreds of arrests and equipment seizures worth millions since early 2025. For instance, a similar raid in Mopani District on the same day arrested four for illegal sand mining, confiscating trucks and tools. These efforts target not just miners but transporters and syndicates, disrupting supply chains that feed into global markets.
Environmental experts warn that unchecked mining in Sekhukhune leads to river siltation, reducing water quality for over 1.2 million residents and harming biodiversity in areas like the Olifants River catchment. Socially, it exacerbates poverty cycles, with women and children often bearing the brunt through health issues and lost livelihoods in agriculture.
The SAPS remains committed to safeguarding communities and protecting natural resources by disrupting illegal mining networks and enforcing compliance with licensing and immigration regulations. Investigations are ongoing, with the task team pursuing all viable leads. High-visibility patrols will continue in Sekhukhune to deter further offences.
Communities are urged to report suspicious mining activity to their nearest police station or the Crime Stop hotline on 08600 10111. Cooperation is key to ensuring swift and lawful action, as seen in this operation where intelligence from locals played a vital role. By standing together, South Africans can help preserve Limpopo’s resources for sustainable development, creating jobs through legal mining and tourism instead of destruction.
