PHEPHELA MODERNISES BASOTHO ORAL POETRY

Tiisetso Makhele

His verses, often narrated verbally, can unflinchingingly embarass Shakespeare in his grave, or even legend Wole Soyinka. This is not a pun, but a reflection of reality. Centuries to come, experts of literature will author loads of theses in trying to unpack his loaded work of poetry. Ke a ikana.

He hails from Maputsoe, Lesotho. He rose to fame through his lyrically charming “Ke a patlotsa” rhymes, which caused Mosotho hip-hop sensation Ntate Stunna Ntate Stunna to feature him on a widely.lauded single album. This assisted the modernization of the Basotho oral poetry, which is deeply embedded in the Basotho Lebollo traditional rites.

He is of the Makholokoe clan, a grandson of Tabane and Mathulare. Whenever he illuminates the Mangae songs with his poetical rhymes, I question if I am actually a Mosotho.

Phephela monna o kgeleke. Basuwe ba sa tlo matha mpetleke ha ba o bona o haha le mona. Lefatshe lohle le tla utlwa bokgeleke ba Basotho ka difela tsa hao. O morui wa difela Moshanaheso. Le mohlang Relebohile Monaphathi Sannere Music a reng o ilo bolla o mo tshwelle ka hanong hoba le khang ka difela Letebele leo la Mothemokholo.

Patlotsa motho wa Morena Khetsi.
