HAD WE ELIMINATED THE TRIPLE CHALLENGES OF POVERTY, INEQUALITY AND UNEMPLOYMENT, SELLO MOROANE WOULD STILL BE ALIVE

“Mmoho re ka hlola crime” – Sello Moroane

The community of Botshabelo and the entire Free State is reeling in shock after an astute community activist, Sello Moroane, was shot mercilessly in his home, and later died in the hands of assassins.

Moroane was a passionate about his community of Botshabelo and, like most people, was disturbed by high levels of crime in the townships. Unlike many, he was not a mere spectator, but an active participant in dealing with crime. This passion would lead to his unfortunate death.

Just hours before he was shot, Moroane requested permission to post about the missing of yet another community activist, Pesa Pheko, who has been missing for about two months. This is a demonstration of Moroane’s selflessness and commitment to social activism.

If there was no crime, Moroane wouldn’t have sacrificed his life. He would have enjoyed his life and lived his peace. Crime is a child of poverty, unemployment and inequality. Crime is NOT a police issue, but a societal matter.

Our townships are war zones because they are sites of poverty. The poor fight each other because of poverty. We must radically implement he Freedom Charter so that we don’t lose social activists like Sello Moroane.

Sello Moroane, my brother, don’t gest in peace. Fight even from your grave. Your killers must not rest. Fight for social and economic justice, for you are a fighter of note. Tsela tshweu, Ntjamme!
