MTN Group Delivers Strong Q3 2025 Results with 25.9% Revenue Growth and 300 Million Subscribers Milestone
Johannesburg – Telecom giant MTN Group has posted impressive third-quarter results for 2025, powered by standout performances in Nigeria and Ghana. The company hit a major mark by crossing 300 million subscribers for the first time, while its Nigerian arm bounced back to positive retained earnings, paving the way for dividend payouts to start again.
Group service revenue jumped 25.9% to R160.38 billion for the nine months to 30 September 2025, with constant currency growth at 22.6%. Sharp rises in data and fintech services drove this, as digital payments kept expanding in key areas. Though South Africa showed slower growth, its postpaid and business services held firm. Better economic conditions across MTN’s markets also helped steady the ship.
With more data use, bigger spends on 5G and a stronger fintech setup, MTN heads into the last quarter with good drive.
Surge in Subscribers and Revenue Highlights
MTN’s subscriber base grew to over 300 million, a big win that shows its strong hold in Africa and beyond. This growth came from adding users in high-potential spots, backed by better networks and new services.
For the nine months, service revenue rose thanks to a 57.1% jump in Nigeria over the period, hitting 67.4% in Q3 alone. Ghana also shone, adding to the overall lift. Data services led the charge, with more people using mobile internet, while fintech – like MoMo – saw transaction volumes reach 16.9 billion, up from before.
In Nigeria, the return to positive retained earnings means dividends can flow again, a relief after tough times with currency woes. This unit alone brought in R43.94 billion in service revenue for the nine months, up 46.9%.
South Africa, MTN’s home base, grew slower due to market pressures, but postpaid plans and business deals stayed solid, helping balance the group results.
Fintech and Data Drive the Momentum
MTN’s fintech arm kept up its strong run, with digital payments growing across markets. This part of the business has become a key earner, as more users turn to mobile money for daily needs.
Data use also climbed, with people streaming more, working online and using apps. MTN’s push into 5G networks is set to fuel this further, with investments aimed at faster speeds and wider coverage.
Better economic setups in MTN’s areas, like easing inflation and steady currencies, helped too. These changes let the company focus on growth without as many hurdles.
Challenges and Outlook for the Future
While the quarter was strong, MTN faces ongoing tests like currency swings, rule changes and competition. South Africa’s slower pace shows local issues, but the group’s wide spread across 19 countries helps cushion blows.
Looking ahead, MTN sees solid ground. Rising data needs, 5G rollouts and fintech growth should keep the push going. The company plans to build on this by spending on networks, new tech and user-focused services.
Investors welcomed the news, with MTN shares holding steady on the JSE. This performance sets a good tone for the full year, as MTN works to stay Africa’s top telecom player.
