After a recent halt due to concerns over foodborne illnesses, tuck shops and food vendors have been permitted to resume operations on school premises in Gauteng. This move follows a series of measures implemented by the Gauteng Education Department to ensure the safety and compliance of food vendors to prevent further health issues among students.

Initial Response to Food Poisoning Incidents

The decision to ban food sales at schools earlier this month was a reaction to a distressing spike in suspected food poisoning cases affecting students across various schools in Gauteng. The temporary suspension was aimed at addressing urgent health concerns and reevaluating vendor compliance with health and safety standards .

Certification and Compliance for Vendors

Under the new guidelines, all food vendors, including tuck shops and traders, are required to obtain proper certification and comply with stringent health regulations before they can operate within school premises. The Gauteng Education Department has emphasized the importance of these vendors being registered and certified through designated municipal offices to enhance the safety of food sold to students .

Ongoing Efforts and Future Directions

The Gauteng Education Department has expressed its commitment to maintaining strict oversight over food sales in schools to safeguard the health of students. Schools and their governing bodies are tasked with monitoring and regulating the vendors to ensure that only those who meet the required health standards are allowed to trade on school premises . This includes ensuring that all food sold is of nutritional value, and that no expired or improperly packaged food items are sold to learners .
