Mamelodi Sundowns
By Sello Masilo
Mamelodi Sundowns commenced a new chapter under Portuguese coach Miguel Cardoso with a hard-fought 1-0 victory over Stellenbosch FC at the DHL Stadium on Wednesday night. The decisive goal came from former Stellenbosch striker Iqraam Rayners in the 18th minute, marking a triumphant start for Cardoso in the Betway Premiership.
First Half: Rayners Strikes Against Former Club
The match began with both teams displaying attacking intent, thrilling the supporters in the opening minutes. Sundowns slightly edged possession, and their efforts paid off when Kobamelo Kodisang threaded a precise pass to Rayners. Demonstrating composure, Rayners rounded goalkeeper Saige Stephens and slotted the ball into the net, choosing a muted celebration out of respect for his former teammates.
Second Half: Sundowns Maintain Pressure
After the break, Sundowns continued to press for a second goal, with Kodisang and Lucas Costa leading the offensive efforts. Despite their dominance, Stellenbosch’s defence held firm, preventing further breaches. As the match progressed, Stellenbosch sought an equaliser but were consistently thwarted by Sundowns’ resolute defending.
Cardoso’s Tactical Acumen
Cardoso’s strategic approach was evident throughout the match. His decision to start Rayners against his former club proved pivotal, and the team’s disciplined performance reflected his coaching philosophy. This victory not only provided a positive start for Cardoso but also extended Sundowns’ unbeaten streak in the league to four matches.
Post-Match Reflections
In a post-match interview, Cardoso acknowledged the team’s solid performance but emphasised the need for continued growth: “We need to grow a lot,” he stated, indicating his commitment to further enhancing the squad’s capabilities.
