Julius Malema’s Ultimatum to ANC: Reinstate EFF Chairperson Nkululeko Dunga or Face Coalition Shake-Up
By Thabo Mosia
Ekurhuleni, South Africa – The political landscape in Ekurhuleni is facing a potential upheaval after Economic Freedom Fighters (EFF) leader Julius Malema issued a stern ultimatum to the African National Congress (ANC). Malema has given the ANC until the end of Thursday to reinstate EFF Gauteng Provincial Chairperson Nkululeko Dunga as the Finance Member of the Mayoral Committee (MMC) in Ekurhuleni. This demand comes on the heels of Ekurhuleni Mayor Nkosindiphile Xhakaza’s decision to remove Dunga from his finance role, citing “unforeseen misalignments.”
Malema disclosed that he had personally discussed the matter with ANC President Cyril Ramaphosa. Should the ANC fail to meet this ultimatum, the EFF plans to withdraw all its MMCs in municipalities where they govern alongside the ANC.

Xhakaza’s Justification
In his official statement on Wednesday, Mayor Xhakaza explained that the reshuffling of the mayoral committee was necessary to “effectively fast-track the completion and approval of the annual budget.” Xhakaza did not share specifics about the “misalignments” but stressed that the transition aims to foster the city’s continued development and growth.
Nomadlozi Nkosi, the current MMC for city planning and economic development, has been temporarily assigned to oversee the finance portfolio until a permanent replacement is announced.
Political Turmoil and Public Reaction
ActionSA, a political party, welcomed the dismissal of Dunga, asserting that his tenure had hindered service delivery and resulted in a negative audit outcome. The party’s statement highlighted Dunga’s controversial record, including a R2 billion security tender, a fatal road accident involving his convoy, and significant audit findings against his department.
ActionSA further urged Mayor Xhakaza to remove the remaining EFF MMCs to enhance service delivery in Ekurhuleni. They also criticised the ANC for allowing what they described as disastrous governance under Dunga’s leadership.
EFF’s Broader Strategy
Malema’s ultimatum is unfolding amid ongoing coalition talks as the EFF aims to stabilise governance structures following the 2024 general elections. The EFF has engaged various political players, but has openly declared it will not form coalitions with right-wing parties like the Democratic Alliance (DA) and Freedom Front Plus (FF+).
The EFF’s non-negotiable pillars focus on service delivery, anti-racism, anti-imperialism, and transparency in agreements with coalition partners. These principles underline Malema’s broader strategy for EFF’s participation in parliamentary and local governance.
