Free State Man Sentenced

By Karabo Marifi – Tragedy struck the serene Kromkuil farm in Bultfontein last year, culminating in a harrowing incident of domestic violence that ended the life of a young woman and led to her husband’s life imprisonment. Captain Stephen Thakeng, spokesperson for the Free State Police, has confirmed the verdict.

On the fateful morning of 23 August 2023, Mating Sinah Lebelonyana, a 29-year-old African female, was subjected to a merciless assault by her husband, Samuel Mzangwa. The assault took place in their home on the Kromkuil farm, escalating with multiple stab wounds inflicted on her body and face.

Displaying immense courage, Mating managed to flee to the farmhouse in a desperate attempt to seek help. Unfortunately, her husband pursued her relentlessly. He caught up with her, further stabbing her and striking her head with a fire extinguisher, causing her to fall and bleed profusely. The noise of the attack alerted the farm owner, who quickly instructed two of his workers to rush her to the hospital in Hoopstad.

Tragically, before they could reach the hospital, the group encountered Sergeants Sehloho and Motseki in a marked police vehicle approximately 500 meters from the farm. It was at this spot that Mating was declared dead.

The immediate arrest of Samuel Mzangwa at the scene set the wheels of justice in motion. The murder case was assigned to Detective Sergeant Oupa Tshabalala of the Bultfontein Detective Services. Demonstrating unwavering dedication, Detective Tshabalala successfully opposed bail, paving the way for a meticulous prosecution process.

On 10 June 2024, the Welkom High Court delivered a decisive verdict. Samuel Mzangwa was found guilty of murder and the contravention of a Protection Order. The sentencing, delivered by Judge Jurch and prosecuted by Advocate Mpemvane, was as follows:

  • Murder: Life sentence without the possibility of parole.
  • Contravention of Court Order: Two years in jail.
