Heavy Traffic

By Nkosana Khumalo

Motorists are advised to brace for significant traffic congestion along the N3 Toll Route on Easter Monday, 21 April 2025, as thousands journey back to Gauteng and KwaZulu-Natal following the long weekend.

The N3 Toll Concession (N3TC) has forecast peak traffic volumes between 10:00 and 20:00, with both northbound and southbound lanes expected to experience heavy delays. Chief Operating Officer Thania Dhoogra emphasised the importance of driver vigilance, stating, “Road users are requested to remain vigilant at all times and to stay informed of prevailing conditions and possible disruptive incidents.”

In anticipation of the surge, law enforcement and Road Incident Management System (RIMS) teams will be strategically stationed along the route, particularly between Cedara in KwaZulu-Natal and Heidelberg in Gauteng. These teams will conduct vehicle roadworthiness inspections and driver compliance checks. Dhoogra noted that authorities may implement traffic control measures, especially in high-risk areas like Van Reenen Pass, to manage flow and enhance safety.

Motorists are encouraged to plan their journeys meticulously, stay updated on traffic conditions, and adhere to all instructions from traffic officials. For real-time updates and emergency assistance, travellers can contact the 24-hour N3 Helpline at 0800 63 43 57 or follow @N3Route on X (formerly Twitter).

With upcoming public holidays such as Freedom Day on 27 April and Workers’ Day on 1 May, further traffic surges are anticipated. Dhoogra advised, “Carefully plan your trip, but be ready to quickly adjust your plans and driving style to possible hazards that may impact your safety, convenience, and mobility.”

Drivers are urged to ensure their vehicles are in optimal condition, remain alert to changing weather conditions, and maintain safe following distances to ensure a safe return home.
