Pope Francis died on Easter Monday, April 21, 2025, at the age of 88 at his residence in the Vatican’s Casa Santa Marta.

The Vatican confirmed that Pope Francis passed away at 7:35 AM CEST. Cardinal Kevin Farrell, the Camerlengo of the Holy Roman Church, announced his death, stating, “At 7:35 this morning, the Bishop of Rome, Francis, returned to the house of the Father.”

Born Jorge Mario Bergoglio on December 17, 1936, in Buenos Aires, Argentina, Pope Francis became the 266th pontiff of the Roman Catholic Church in March 2013. He was the first Jesuit pope, the first from the Americas, and the first non-European pontiff in over a millennium.

Pope Francis was known for his humility and commitment to social justice. He chose to reside in the Vatican’s Casa Santa Marta guesthouse rather than the traditional Apostolic Palace, emphasizing a simpler lifestyle. His papacy focused on issues such as poverty, climate change, and the inclusion of marginalized communities.

Despite facing health challenges, including a partial lung removal in his youth and colon surgery in 2021, Pope Francis remained active in his duties. He was hospitalized earlier in 2025 for double pneumonia but continued to lead, delivering his final Easter blessing from St. Peter’s Basilica on April 20.

The Vatican has not yet announced the details of Pope Francis’s funeral. However, preparations are underway for a papal conclave to elect his successor, following the traditional procedures of the Catholic Church.

Pope Francis’s death marks the end of a transformative era for the Catholic Church, characterized by efforts to modernize and address contemporary global issues. His legacy as a compassionate and reform-minded leader will continue to influence the Church and its followers worldwide.
