Gauteng MEC for Education Matome Chiloane

The Gauteng Department of Education MEC Matome Chiloane has strongly condemned the shocking attack on the Acting Principal of Northview High School, who was shot six times in his office on Tuesday, 3 December 2024. The brazen act of violence has left the school community traumatised and raised serious concerns about safety in educational institutions across Gauteng.

Details of the Incident

According to the Gauteng Department of Education spokesperson Steve Mabona, the attack occurred during school hours when two unidentified armed men entered the premises under the pretext of providing the Acting Principal with a quotation for tree felling. The men were escorted to the Principal’s office, where they suddenly opened fire, hitting him six times before fleeing the scene.

The Acting Principal was rushed to a nearby hospital and remains in the intensive care unit (ICU) in stable but critical condition.

Police Investigation Underway

Law enforcement authorities have launched an urgent investigation into the shooting. Efforts to identify and apprehend the suspects are ongoing, with police reviewing available security footage and interviewing witnesses.

While the motive for the attack remains unclear, the Gauteng Department of Education has pledged its full cooperation with law enforcement to ensure those responsible are brought to justice.

Trauma Counselling for Learners and Educators

In response to the incident, the Department’s Psycho-Social Support Unit will be deployed to Northview High School on Wednesday, 4 December 2024. The unit will provide trauma counselling and emotional support to learners, educators, and staff affected by the attack.

The Department emphasised the importance of mental health support for those impacted, acknowledging the distress caused by such a violent and unexpected act.

MEC Chiloane Condemns the Attack

Gauteng Education MEC Matome Chiloane expressed outrage and dismay at the brazen act of violence, which he described as an attack on the sanctity of the educational environment.

“As the Department, we are deeply shocked by this brazen act of violence and lawlessness, which not only targeted a school leader but undermined the sanctity of our educational institution,” Chiloane said.

He added, “We are working closely with law enforcement to ensure the perpetrators are brought to book. Our thoughts and prayers are with the Acting Principal, his family, and the school community during this difficult time. We wish him a speedy recovery.”
