The Gauteng Department of Education is mourning the sudden and tragic death of a female IsiXhosa NSC examination paper marker who passed away following an accident at the Alberton Marking Centre on Tuesday, 3 December 2024. The 50-year-old marker, whose dedication to the education sector was widely respected, succumbed to her injuries after reportedly tripping and hitting her head against a pole while exiting the marking centre.

A Loss Felt Across the Education Sector

Gauteng Education MEC Matome Chiloane expressed his profound sadness at the untimely passing, highlighting the significant role the marker played in contributing to the success of South Africa’s National Senior Certificate (NSC) examination process.

“We extend our heartfelt condolences to the family, friends, and colleagues of the deceased marker,” said MEC Chiloane in a statement. “Her commitment to the education sector was invaluable, and her untimely passing is a profound loss to all of us.”

The marker, described by her colleagues as diligent and passionate, had been an integral part of the team handling the IsiXhosa examination papers. Her unexpected death has left her peers and the broader education community in shock.

Immediate Response and Support

Following the tragic incident, the Gauteng Department of Education’s Psycho-Social Support Unit was deployed to the Alberton Marking Centre. The unit is providing emotional support and counselling to colleagues and staff members who were deeply affected by the incident.

The Department has urged all markers and educational staff to make use of these services to help process the grief and trauma caused by the loss.

Details of the Incident

According to preliminary reports, the marker was leaving the Alberton Marking Centre on Tuesday evening when she allegedly tripped and hit her head against a pole. She was rushed to a nearby hospital for immediate medical attention. Unfortunately, despite efforts to save her, she succumbed to her injuries later that night.

The Department has pledged to investigate the circumstances leading to the incident to ensure workplace safety protocols are reviewed and reinforced where necessary.

Tributes Pour In

Messages of condolence and tributes have poured in from across the education sector and the wider public. Fellow markers and educators took to social media to express their sadness and share fond memories of the deceased.

“She was more than just a colleague; she was a mentor and a friend to many of us. Her dedication to her work and her unwavering commitment to the success of learners will never be forgotten,” said one colleague.
