Fatal Multi-Vehicle Crash

Four people lost their lives and one was left fighting for survival in a devastating multi-vehicle collision on the R59 highway near Sasolburg in the Free State. The accident, which happened on Monday, 20 October 2025, involved two heavy trucks and a light motor vehicle, underscoring the deadly risks on one of South Africa’s key transport routes.

Free State Emergency Medical Services (EMS) spokesperson Sipho Towa has called on drivers to be extra careful and find other paths while teams handle the scene. This incident adds to the growing list of road fatalities in the province, prompting fresh pleas for safer driving habits as the festive season nears.
The crash has left families shattered and communities in shock, highlighting how quickly a routine commute can turn fatal. With the survivor set to be airlifted for urgent care, authorities are probing what led to the smash, amid concerns over truck safety and highway conditions in the area.

Chaos on the R59: Details of the Deadly Collision

The accident unfolded on the R59 Vaalpark offramp, just before the N1 junction from Sasolburg, a busy stretch often packed with commuters and freight haulers. Reports indicate the light motor vehicle got trapped between the two trucks, resulting in a severe impact that claimed four lives instantly. The victims, all from the smaller car, were pronounced dead at the scene by arriving paramedics.
The sole survivor, a passenger in critical condition, was stabilised on site before being prepared for an airlift to a nearby hospital. EMS teams worked swiftly amid the wreckage, which scattered debris across the road and halted traffic. Photos from the scene, shared by traffic authorities, show the mangled remains of the vehicles, a stark reminder of the force involved.
While the exact cause is under investigation, preliminary accounts suggest factors like speed or a mechanical fault may have played a role. No injuries were reported among the truck drivers, but the heavy vehicles suffered major damage, complicating cleanup efforts.
Emergency Response: Heroes on the Frontline
EMS personnel, police, and traffic officials rushed to the site shortly after the crash was reported, securing the area and providing aid. Towa praised the quick actions of responders, who focused on saving the injured while managing the chaos. “EMS personnel were currently on the scene and attending to the incident,” he noted, confirming the airlift plan for the critically hurt passenger.
This response ties into broader festive season safety drives in the Free State, where operations include more checkpoints and awareness campaigns. The province has seen a spike in accidents, with over 200 road deaths in 2024 alone, often linked to speeding, fatigue, or drunk driving—issues that peak during holidays.

Traffic Havoc: Road Closures and Detours

The crash forced a full shutdown of the R59 in the affected area, causing long queues and delays for hours. Towa urged: “Road users are advised to exercise caution and seek an alternative route.” Suggested paths include the R57 or R553 Golden Highway, which bypass the scene but may add time to trips.
Social media buzzed with updates, with users like TrafficSA sharing images of the wreckage to warn drivers. Commuters heading from Sasolburg to the N1 were hit hardest, with backups stretching kilometres. Authorities aim to reopen the road soon, but investigations and debris removal could take time.
In Gauteng and Free State, similar incidents have prompted calls for better signage, speed enforcement, and truck inspections on highways like the R59, a vital link for goods and people.
