Vusi Tshabalala Joins MK Party
By Nkosana Khumalo
Vusi Tshabalala, the former Chief Whip of the African National Congress (ANC) in the Free State Provincial Legislature, has officially joined the uMkhonto weSizwe Party (MK Party). This move marks a significant shift in the province’s political landscape, given Tshabalala’s longstanding association with the ANC and his close ties to prominent figures such as Ace Magashule and Jacob Zuma.
A Political Journey
Tshabalala’s political career has been deeply rooted in the Free State. He served as the Mayor of Maluti-a-Phofung Municipality from 2013 to 2018, a tenure marked by both development initiatives and controversies. In 2019, he transitioned to the Free State Provincial Legislature, where he was appointed as the Majority Chief Whip. However, in October 2021, the ANC suspended him amid allegations of supporting independent candidates during the local government elections—a charge he consistently denied. By June 2022, the ANC’s Provincial Disciplinary Committee acquitted him due to insufficient evidence.
Alignment with the MK Party
The MK Party, established in December 2023, has rapidly gained traction, especially among former ANC members seeking an alternative platform. The party positions itself as a champion of justice, integrity, and effective service delivery. Tshabalala’s decision to join the MK Party aligns with this vision, as he aims to contribute to transformative leadership in the Free State.
Lehlohonolo Stona, the MK Youth League Convenor in the Free State, expressed enthusiasm about Tshabalala’s membership, stating, “His wealth of experience and unwavering commitment to the people is bound to strengthen our efforts in delivering progressive and transformative leadership.”
Community Engagement
Beyond his political roles, Tshabalala has been active in community development. In August 2022, he launched the Vusi Tshabalala Foundation at the Thiboloha School for the Deaf and Blind in Phuthaditjhaba, underscoring his dedication to social upliftment.
