Emergency Power Supply
On Thursday, 19 July 2025 (Today), the Emfuleni Local Municipality (ELM) announced an ongoing emergency power supply interruption affecting several areas due to issues at the Town Substation. The municipality shared the update via their Facebook page, detailing the current efforts to restore electricity and the areas impacted.
Current Situation and Restoration Efforts
The Emfuleni Local Municipality, in collaboration with Eskom technicians, is actively working to restore power at the Town Substation. According to the update, the team is conducting critical tests to assess the condition of the power transformer and identify any potential damages. Alongside this, they are testing the transformer oil and the substation earthing to ensure the system’s safety and functionality.
Once these tests are complete, the technicians will replace burned control cables and adjust the setup by swinging 11kV cables from two Ring Main Units (RMUs) to balance the electrical load. The municipality has stated that an Estimated Time of Restoration (ETR) will be shared with the public after the final tests on the operations protection are concluded.
The municipality has emphasized that their teams are working diligently to resolve the issue and normalize the power supply as quickly as possible.
Affected Areas
The power supply interruption is impacting residents and businesses in the following areas:
- Bonanne
- NW7
- Stephanopark
- CW Areas
- Bophelong
- Bophelong Extensions
These communities are currently without electricity, and the municipality has appealed for patience from consumers as they address the situation.
Municipality’s Message to Residents
In their statement, the Emfuleni Local Municipality acknowledged the inconvenience caused by the outage and expressed gratitude for the understanding of affected residents. They assured the public that their teams are putting in maximum effort to restore power and urged consumers to remain patient during this period.
