EFF Youth Command Dominates Wits SRC Elections: Clean Sweep for 2025/26 Term

In a resounding victory for the Economic Freedom Fighters (EFF) at the University of the Witwatersrand (Wits), the EFF Youth Command has secured all 13 directly elected seats in the Student Representative Council (SRC) for the 2025/26 term.

The results, announced on Tuesday, 23 September 2025, reflect strong student support for the EFF’s agenda on campus issues like fees, safety, and equality. As South Africa celebrates Heritage Day, this outcome underscores the role of youth politics in shaping a more equitable future, with the EFF’s emphasis on radical transformation resonating deeply among Wits students.

The clean sweep grants the EFF Youth Command full control over the SRC’s directly elected positions, bolstering their influence on university matters. Social media erupted with celebrations from EFF supporters, viewing the win as a testament to growing youth empowerment. The new council is poised to address pressing student concerns, including campaigns against gender-based violence (#WitsAgainstGBV) and advocating for accessible education.
EFF leader Julius Malema reacted to the results, expressing his happiness. Earlier this week, he announced that he also voted for the EFFYC, highlighting his personal endorsement of the youth wing’s efforts.

Announcement and Key Winners

The election results were shared in a live stream by Wits University, drawing cheers from EFF supporters. The 13 winners, all in bright red shirts with EFF branding, include a mix of fresh faces ready to lead. Here are the elected representatives:

  • Thuto Hleza
  • Antonett Khoza
  • Godknows Maswanganye
  • Musa Mavuso
  • Sonwabo Mhlahlo
  • Mathatsi Mosima
  • Gilbert Nchabeleng
  • Sibusiso Ngeele
  • Thapelo Nkoana
  • Aphelele Qwabi
  • Nsovo Sondlani
  • Vuyi Twala
  • Mandulo Xaba
These leaders will serve for the 2025/26 term, working on student welfare, academic rights, and campus safety. The EFF Youth Command’s strong showing follows their wins in past years, where they grabbed eight out of 13 seats in 2023. This time, they went all the way, showing their growing pull among Wits students.
