The Economic Freedom Fighters (EFF) have announced changes to their Limpopo Provincial Command Team (PCT) following an unsatisfactory performance in the National and Provincial Elections (NPE) of 2024. EFF’s National Spokesperson, Leigh-Ann Mathys, communicated this decision, highlighting the party’s commitment to enhancing its provincial strength and electoral appeal.

Key Changes in the Provincial Command Team

The critical positions affected in the PCT include the Provincial Chairperson, Provincial Secretary, Provincial Deputy Secretary, and Provincial Treasurer. Leigh-Ann Mathys stated, “Reflecting on our performance, we noted severe shortcomings in the Limpopo PCT, necessitating the reconfiguration of the Top 5 positions. This decision follows comprehensive evaluations by the Central Command Team (CCT) and the Central Elections Task Force (CETF).”

The members relieved of their duties are:

  • Provincial Chairperson: Commissar Tshilidzi Maraga
  • Provincial Secretary: Commissar Mokwape Ramalobela
  • Provincial Deputy Secretary: Fighter Mpusheng Leshabane
  • Provincial Treasurer: Commissar Tinyiko Manganye

EFF Constitutional Mandates and Proceedings

The decision to reconfigure the PCT is grounded in Section 14(10) of the EFF Constitution. This section empowers the CCT to remove and replace incompetent members following due process. Leigh-Ann Mathys elaborated, “After giving the concerned members the opportunity to justify their positions, the Special War Council concluded that a change was vital.”

Consequently, the new appointments are as follows:

  • Provincial Chairperson: Commissar Lawrence Mapoulo
  • Provincial Secretary: Commissar Kgothatso Mogoane
  • Provincial Deputy Secretary: Fighter Dunani Baloyi
  • Provincial Treasurer: Fighter Meisie Kennedy

Comparative Election Performance: 2019 vs. 2024

A detailed analysis reveals a stark contrast in the EFF’s electoral performance in Limpopo over the past two national and provincial elections. In 2019, the EFF secured a robust 27.3% of the vote, translating to 16 seats. However, the 2024 election results showed a decline, with the EFF capturing only 14.12% of the vote, resulting in a mere 9 seats.

2024 Provincial Results:

  • ANC: 1,037,627 votes | 73.3% | 48 seats
  • EFF: 199,900 votes | 14.12% | 9 seats
  • DA: 84,388 votes | 5.96% | 4 seats
  • VF PLUS: 15,393 votes | 1.09% | 1 seat
  • M.K.: 12,027 votes | 0.85% | 1 seat
  • UAT: 11,653 votes | 0.82% | 1 seat

This downward trend necessitated a strategic response from the EFF’s leadership, aiming to reinvigorate the party’s provincial operations and electoral performance.

Future Outlook

The newly appointed PCT leaders are entrusted with the responsibility of revitalising the party’s image and influence in Limpopo. Mathys expressed optimism about the future, stating, “We believe these appointments signal a new era for the EFF in Limpopo. The incoming leaders are expected to execute their roles with utmost dedication, ensuring the party’s growth and efficiency.”
