Economic Freedom Fighters (EFF)
By Thabo Mosia
The Economic Freedom Fighters (EFF) have reaffirmed their commitment to addressing South Africa’s pressing challenges in their 2025 vision. In their New Year message issued on 31 December 2024, the EFF reflected on a year of both achievements and obstacles, while pledging to intensify efforts to combat poverty, unemployment, and gender-based violence (GBV).
The party acknowledged the hurdles faced in 2024, including contesting the National and Provincial Elections in what they described as a “hostile political environment.” Despite registering marginal losses, the EFF remains resolute in its mission for economic freedom and the dismantling of capitalist structures. They highlighted key achievements such as numerous manifesto launches and the success of their 11th Anniversary celebrations, which marked a milestone for the leftist party.
2024: A Year of Challenges and Resilience
Reflecting on 2024, the EFF described it as a year marked by resilience in the face of adversity. The party’s statement emphasised their role as the only political movement that consistently “speaks truth to power” despite attempts by the “capitalist establishment” to undermine them.
The party held numerous manifesto launches across all provinces, demonstrating what they call “unshakable faith” in their policies by the people. This engagement, coupled with their grassroots mobilisation efforts, reinforced their ideological foundation and commitment to addressing systemic issues plaguing South Africa.
Strengthening Internal Democracy
The EFF’s 3rd National People’s Assembly was hailed as a resounding success. Thousands of delegates participated in discussions and passed resolutions aimed at strengthening the party’s policies and structure. According to the EFF, this assembly reaffirmed their commitment to economic justice, land redistribution, and the dismantling of oppressive capitalist frameworks.
The assembly also allowed the party to evaluate and refine its strategies, ensuring the EFF remains a revolutionary movement focused on the needs of South Africans. Electoral setbacks were acknowledged, but the party used these experiences to further their engagement with communities and bolster grassroots support.
Tackling South Africa’s Key Issues
In their statement, the EFF highlighted several critical challenges facing the nation, including poverty, unemployment, GBV, and crime. They pledged to address these issues head-on through targeted policies and community-driven initiatives.
Poverty and Unemployment
The party expressed concern over the alarming poverty rates, with millions of South Africans struggling to access basic necessities like food, water, and shelter. They noted the particularly high levels of unemployment among the youth, which contributes to “hopelessness and deepening inequality.”
Gender-Based Violence
The EFF reaffirmed their commitment to fighting GBV, which continues to terrorise women and children across the country. They criticised what they see as “insufficient institutional responses” to this crisis and called for decisive action to protect vulnerable populations.
Crime and Corruption
In addition to GBV, the party identified crime as a pervasive issue threatening the safety and security of communities. They linked this to systemic failures and socio-economic conditions, pledging to push for policies that combat crime and corruption effectively.
A Vision for 2025
Looking ahead, the EFF reiterated their dedication to the principles of economic freedom and justice for all. They outlined several priorities for 2025, including:
1. Land Redistribution: Advocating for equitable land ownership as a means to address historical injustices and promote economic empowerment.
2. Job Creation: Supporting sustainable economic policies that generate employment opportunities for South Africans, particularly the youth.
3. Fighting Inequality: Developing programmes that tackle systemic inequalities and improve access to essential services.
The party also pledged to intensify their efforts to hold the government accountable and demand action on issues affecting the most vulnerable. They remain steadfast in their mission to create a safe and just society for all South Africans.
A Message of Unity and Hope
The EFF’s New Year message emphasised the importance of unity in the face of calculated attempts to sow division. They highlighted their resilience against “relentless attacks from biased, white-supremacist media” and concerted efforts to destabilise their movement. Despite these challenges, the party remains focused on their revolutionary ideals and commitment to the people.
The statement concluded with a pledge to continue fighting for economic freedom in 2025, rooted in the principles of justice and equality. The EFF called on South Africans to join them in this struggle, emphasising that collective action is essential to overcoming the country’s challenges.
