Killer Back in Court as Bail Application Continues
By Thabo Mosia
Johannesburg –
The man accused of gunning down popular media personality Warrick Stock, better known.as DJ Warras, is back in the Johannesburg Magistrate’s Court today as his bail application gets under way.
Victor Mthethwa Majola, aged 44, faces serious charges in a case that has shocked South Africans and drawn widespread attention since the tragic shooting last month.
The hearing, set for this morning on 13 January 2026, comes after a brief appearance last week where the matter was put off to allow for more preparation.
Majola limped into court during his last outing, claiming he had been mistreated by police during his arrest, but he has since confirmed receiving medical care while in custody.
The state is ready to fight hard against his release, pointing to the gravity of the accusations.
The Tragic Shooting That Shook the Nation
DJ Warras, a well-loved radio host and DJ whose real name was Warrick Robert Stock, was shot dead in broad daylight on 16 December 2025.
The attack happened outside a hijacked building in the Johannesburg CBD, a spot known as Zambezi House. Witnesses described a chaotic scene where the 35-year-old was ambushed and fatally wounded.
Investigators believe the killing may be tied to DJ Warras’s work in private security. He was involved in efforts to reclaim buildings taken over illegally, a risky job in areas plagued by crime and disputes over property.
This line of work often puts people at odds with powerful groups, and police have hinted that the motive could stem from such conflicts.
The shooting sent ripples through the entertainment world, with tributes pouring in from fans, fellow DJs, and celebrities who remembered him as a vibrant figure who “lit-up” clubs and airwaves for years.
Majola was nabbed along with another suspect on 22 December 2025 at Merafe Hostel in Soweto. Charges against the co-accused were later dropped, leaving Majola as the only one in the dock.
He faces counts of premeditated murder and conspiracy to commit murder, which fall under Schedule 6 offences.
These are among the toughest in South African law, meaning bail is not easy to get—the accused must show exceptional reasons why he should be let out while awaiting trial.
Details of the Bail Application
Today’s proceedings mark the formal start of Majola’s bid for freedom on bail. His legal team, led by attorney Mabunda, has expressed strong belief in his chances.
They argue that the state’s case is weak, with little solid proof linking him directly to the crime. In past court chats, the defence has pointed out gaps in the evidence, suggesting this could count as an exceptional circumstance under the law.
On the other side, the National Prosecuting Authority plans to oppose bail firmly. Prosecutors say the charges are too serious, and letting Majola out could put witnesses at risk or let him skip town.
During the short hearing on 6 January 2026, the court checked Majola’s home address and heard about his health issues. He appeared hobbling, blaming rough handling by officers, but assured the magistrate he had seen a doctor in prison.
Legal experts note that for Schedule 6 cases, like this one, the bar is high. A past ruling in a similar matter said that if there’s real doubt about the state’s case succeeding, it might tip the scales for bail.
But with investigations still going on, and talk of possible more arrests, the judge will weigh all this carefully. The hearing could wrap up today or spill over, depending on how arguments unfold.
Family’s Heartache and Call for Justice
The Stock family has been hit hard by the loss. DJ Warras’s sister, Nicole Stock, spoke out after a recent court date, her voice breaking as she shared the pain of losing her brother.
She appealed for prayers and unity, saying the family is still coming to terms with the senseless act. “We are struggling to accept what happened,” she said, urging South Africans to stand together against violence.
Friends and loved ones have echoed this, painting a picture of DJ Warras as more than just a media star.
He was a husband, father, and community figure who used his platform to inspire others. His death has sparked debates about safety in the city and the dangers faced by those tackling urban decay, like reclaiming hijacked spots.
Public interest remains sky-high, with crowds filling the court gallery last time and many following updates online. Some have questioned if Majola is the only one involved, calling for a deeper probe into who might have ordered the hit.
Broader Implications for Crime and Security
This case shines a light on bigger issues in Johannesburg, where hijacked buildings and related crimes are rife. DJ Warras’s security firm was knee-deep in operations to clear out unlawful occupants, a task that often leads to clashes.
Police say they are digging into all angles, including any ties to organised groups or business rivals.
If Majola gets bail, it could set off fresh outcry from those wanting swift justice. On the flip side, if denied, it keeps him locked up as the trial gears up, which could take months.
The final call rests on whether the court sees enough grounds to keep him behind bars or let him await trial at home.
As the bail battle plays out today, many eyes are on the Johannesburg Magistrate’s Court.
For the family, friends, and fans of DJ Warras, it’s a step towards closure in a story that has left a void in South Africa’s entertainment scene.
Updates from the hearing are expected as the day goes on, with hopes that truth and accountability will prevail.
