Comrades Marathon
By Neo Mofokeng
Moira Harding, the Comrades Marathon runner who went missing shortly after completing the 90 km race on Sunday, has been located and urgently taken to hospital for treatment.
In the early hours of Monday morning, following a widespread search involving paramedics, police, metro officers, and the public, Harding was discovered near Point Road on Durban’s Mahatma Gandhi Road—about seven kilometres from the race finish line. She was in a critical state, disoriented and suffering from hypothermia, and was immediately attended to by Advanced Life Support Paramedics on scene before being airlifted to a nearby hospital .
ALS Paramedics Director Garrith Jamieson confirmed that Harding’s condition necessitated urgent medical care. “Advanced Life Support Paramedics are currently treating the patient on scene before she is transported to a nearby hospital for the urgent care she requires,” he said . She was then airlifted by helicopter to hospital, with a road closure on Mahatma Gandhi Road arranged for the landing .
Despite completing the Comrades Marathon in 10 hours 52 minutes, Harding became disoriented after finishing and walked for around eight kilometres through Durban before disappearing from view . According to race director Alain Dalais, the search party worked through the night before locating her in the early hours of Monday .
In a later update, Garrith Jamieson explained that extreme fatigue from the race, combined with chilly, wet weather conditions overnight, left Harding severely cold and confused. “She was extremely cold, hyperthermic, which leads to a further state of confusion,” he noted . Her family stated that she was found disoriented and taken to a hospital in Umhlanga .
Race organiser Alain Dalais said organisers are “relieved she has been found,” noting that another runner had suffered cardiac arrest but was stable following medical intervention . There were no reported fatalities during this edition of the Comrades Marathon .
The rescue was a concerted effort involving the Comrades Marathon Association, ALS Paramedics, SAPS, Metro Police Search and Rescue, Netcare 911, NSRI, and numerous volunteers . A local Facebook post described her condition as “found alive not in good condition taken to hospital”
