ANC Welcomes Back Mahlengi Bhengu as National Spokesperson After Extended Leave

Johannesburg – The African National Congress has announced the official return of Mahlengi Bhengu to her role as National Spokesperson, following a period of absence that allowed her to attend to personal matters. In a media statement released on Wednesday, 20 November 2025, the party expressed appreciation for the support from the media and public during her time away and extended thanks to Nonceba Mhlauli for her effective handling of the position in an acting capacity. Bhengu’s comeback signals a return to stability in the ANC’s communication efforts, as the organisation continues its push for renewal and effective governance.

Bhengu, a key figure in the party’s leadership, steps back into a role she has held since January 2023, bringing her experience and dedication to the forefront once more.

Smooth Transition and Gratitude to Acting Spokesperson

The ANC highlighted Mhlauli’s contributions during Bhengu’s absence, noting her professional stewardship ensured continuity in sharing the organisation’s positions. “The ANC also extends its gratitude to comrade Nonceba Mhlauli for her effective and professional stewardship as Acting National Spokesperson. Her leadership ensured continuity in communicating the positions of the organisation, and the movement thanks her for her service,” the statement read.

Mhlauli, who took over the acting role in November 2024, managed media relations and public engagements with poise, helping the party navigate key events and announcements. Her efforts kept the ANC’s voice strong, and the handover back to Bhengu is expected to be seamless.

Reason for Bhengu’s Absence and Renewed Focus

Bhengu’s time away began around October 2024, stemming from family responsibilities, including maternity leave. In a personal message shared earlier, she expressed thanks to the ANC for granting her the space needed during a challenging time. “I extend my heartfelt gratitude to the ANC for granting me the much-needed space and rest during a difficult personal time. As I return to my duties, I am filled with renewed energy and focus, ready to contribute to our collective mission,” Bhengu said.

Her absence allowed her to prioritise family while the party maintained operations. Now back, Bhengu has voiced eagerness to dive into work, aligning with the ANC’s goals of unity and progress. This return comes at a busy time for the organisation, with ongoing efforts to address national issues like economic growth and social justice.

Bhengu’s Background and Key Contributions

Mahlengi Bhengu brings a wealth of experience to her role. A former ANC Youth League activist, she rose through the ranks to become a trusted voice in the party. Elected to the ANC’s National Executive Committee at the 55th National Conference in December 2022, she was appointed National Spokesperson in January 2023, making her one of the youngest in that position.

Known for her clear and engaging communication style, Bhengu has handled major announcements, from election strategies to policy updates. She has been vocal on issues like gender equality, youth empowerment, and the party’s renewal agenda. In recent years, she has represented the ANC in media briefings, defending its positions and promoting unity.

Her work has included coordinating responses during key events, such as by-elections where the ANC celebrated victories in Mpumalanga and Limpopo. Bhengu has also engaged in public discourse, rejecting nominations to Parliament to focus on her spokesperson duties, showing her commitment to the role.

Public and Party Reactions to Her Return

The announcement has been met with positive feedback from within the ANC and beyond. Party Secretary General Fikile Mbalula shared the statement, reinforcing the organisation’s appreciation for both Bhengu and Mhlauli. Supporters on social media welcomed her back, praising her as a strong advocate for the party’s vision.
