Pienaar Township
By Karabo Marifi
Two suspects arrested in connection with the mass shooting in Pienaar Township are expected to appear in the KaBokweni Magistrate’s Court in Mpumalanga today. This follows the arrest of a third suspect, who appeared yesterday at the Nelspruit Magistrate’s Court in Mbombela on charges related to the possession of illegal firearms.
Background of the Incident
The mass shooting occurred in the early hours of Saturday, 11 January 2025, at a tavern in Pienaar, resulting in the deaths of eight individuals—one woman and seven men. Six victims were pronounced dead at the scene, while two others succumbed to their injuries in hospital. Three additional victims sustained injuries and are currently receiving medical treatment.
Arrests and Court Proceedings
During a press briefing at the provincial police headquarters, Acting Provincial Commissioner Major-General Zeph Mkhwanazi provided updates on the arrests. He confirmed that one suspect was apprehended in possession of three illegal firearms, though no ammunition was found with the weapons. This individual appeared in court yesterday on charges related to firearm possession and is expected to face additional charges, including murder and attempted murder, in subsequent court appearances.
The two other suspects are scheduled to appear in the KaBokweni Magistrate’s Court today, facing charges of murder and attempted murder. Major-General Mkhwanazi emphasized the ongoing nature of the investigation, stating, “Detectives are working diligently to uncover the full circumstances surrounding this tragic incident.”
Community Impact and Police Response
The mass shooting has sent shockwaves through the Pienaar community, prompting calls for increased security measures and a thorough investigation. In response, the South African Police Service (SAPS) has activated a 72-hour plan, assembling a team of experts to expedite the investigation and ensure that the perpetrators are brought to justice.
Acting Provincial Commissioner Mkhwanazi condemned the violence, stating, “We are very much concerned about these shooting incidents that have occurred recently in our province; however, we are working around the clock to ensure that perpetrators thereof are swiftly brought to book.”
Community Safety Measures
In light of the incident, the police have urged tavern owners and liquor traders to prioritize the safety of their patrons. Mpumalanga MEC for Community Safety, Security, and Liaison, Jackie Macie, emphasized the importance of compliance with operating hours and safety regulations, stating, “We are again calling on liquor traders to always prioritize the safety of their patrons.”
Ongoing Investigation
The motive behind the shooting remains under investigation. Police have not ruled out the possibility of gang-related activity, as preliminary investigations suggest that gang wars may have been a contributing factor. Major-General Mkhwanazi has instructed detectives to leave no stone unturned in their pursuit of justice.
Public Appeal for Information
SAPS has appealed to the public for any information that could assist in the investigation. Community members are encouraged to come forward with information, with assurances that all details will be treated with confidentiality. Anyone with information is urged to contact the Crime Stop number on 08600 10111 or send information via the MYSAPSAPP.
