Zuma Demands Immediate Reinstatement
By Thabo Mosia
Former President Jacob Zuma has issued an ultimatum to the African National Congress (ANC), demanding the reinstatement of his membership, which was terminated in late 2024. Through the JG Zuma Foundation, Zuma declared that he would pursue legal action if the ANC fails to address his concerns and reinstate him by 31 January 2025.
In a statement issued on 8 January 2025, JG Zuma Foundation spokesperson Mzwanele Manyi said:
“Attorneys representing the Patron of the JG Zuma Foundation, H.E. President Zuma, have today sent a letter of demand to the African National Congress (ANC) requesting the reinstatement of his ANC membership, which was unprocedurally terminated late last year.”
The letter highlighted alleged procedural irregularities in the ANC’s National Disciplinary Committee (NDC) and National Disciplinary Committee of Appeal (NDCA) processes, which Zuma’s attorneys believe would be invalidated upon independent legal review.
Claims of Irregularities and Victimisation
The letter also criticised ANC Secretary-General Fikile Mbalula for alleged acts of intimidation and victimisation, specifically targeting Zuma’s representative, Tony Yengeni. According to the statement, Mbalula’s actions have undermined the ANC’s internal processes and contravened its constitution. Despite these challenges, Yengeni has remained committed to representing Zuma with fairness and justice.
“Such conduct not only contravenes the ANC Constitution but also undermines the integrity of the organisation’s internal processes,” the statement said.
A Broader Reflection on the ANC’s Challenges
The dispute extends beyond Zuma’s personal grievances, reflecting growing concerns over the ANC’s leadership and direction. The JG Zuma Foundation accused the current ANC leadership of abandoning the party’s founding principles, alleging that the organisation is being run by individuals whose actions resemble those of askaris (collaborators).
“There is a growing perception that the organisation is being led by individuals whose actions undermine the movement’s historic mission,” the Foundation said.
Background on Zuma’s Expulsion
Zuma’s ANC membership was terminated following allegations of his involvement in forming a rival political party, the MK Party. On 22 November 2024, the ANC’s NDCA upheld the decision to expel Zuma, citing his actions as a breach of the party’s principles of revolutionary morality, discipline, and democratic centralism.
The ANC’s official statement declared:
“Mr Zuma’s behaviour exemplifies the highest form of ill-discipline and a direct assault on the historical mission of the ANC. By establishing and leading a rival political party, he abandoned the core values of organisational loyalty and collective accountability.”
Yengeni Faces Disciplinary Action
The fallout from Zuma’s expulsion has further embroiled party veteran Tony Yengeni, who has been vocal in his criticism of ANC President Cyril Ramaphosa and the party’s leadership. Yengeni has used social media to defend Zuma and question the ANC’s disciplinary actions.
ANC Secretary-General Mbalula announced that Yengeni would face disciplinary action, stating:
“Leaders of the ANC tweeting things that bring the ANC into disrepute will be disciplined. Discipline in the ANC is important.”
ANC Divided Over Zuma’s Expulsion
The ANC’s decision to expel Zuma has sparked division within the party, with some members questioning the fairness of the process. The upcoming ANC birthday celebrations in Cape Town have further highlighted the party’s challenges in maintaining unity and regaining support in the Western Cape, where the DA holds power.
Zuma’s Call for Justice and Fairness
Zuma’s demands for reinstatement have been framed as a broader appeal for justice within the ANC. His letter of demand underscores the importance of adhering to the party’s founding principles and ensuring that all members are treated equitably.
“The Foundation urges the ANC to prioritise fairness, consistency, and adherence to its founding principles, ensuring that all members are protected from selective disciplinary actions or factional vendettas,” the statement said.
Next Steps
The ANC has until 31 January 2025 to respond to Zuma’s demands. Failure to do so could result in legal action, marking a significant escalation in the ongoing feud between Zuma and the ANC leadership.
